Science fiction remains a consistently popular genre in film, successfully staying relevant to audiences over time. Many sci-fi movies have become iconic and deeply influential. While the genre has always adapted to changing times, every era has produced films worth remembering. The 1970s, in particular, were a pivotal decade for science fiction in cinema for several important reasons.
As visual effects improved, filmmakers felt more confident tackling ambitious science fiction stories. Many classic sci-fi films from the 1970s are still beloved by audiences today, proving their lasting appeal. While the decade produced a lot of great sci-fi, only a few films truly reach perfection and rank among the genre’s all-time best.
5) A Clockwork Orange (1971)

Stanley Kubrick’s film A Clockwork Orange is widely considered a classic, and despite not relying heavily on special effects, it’s a standout science fiction movie. The story, set in a disturbing future, follows a violent young man undergoing experimental treatment and has captivated viewers for decades. Its high quality in writing, cinematography, and acting means that attempts to remake it are generally seen as unnecessary. Even though it was once banned, A Clockwork Orange remains a prime example of how strong the sci-fi genre was in the early 1970s.
4) Silent Running (1972)

Often overlooked, Silent Running is a fantastic science fiction film from the 1970s that deserves more recognition. It’s considered a landmark movie in the genre, thanks to its story of a botanist who prioritizes saving plants over his crew, a concept that has inspired many sci-fi films since. While not as famous as some other classics, Silent Running played a significant role in shaping the appeal and possibilities of big-budget science fiction and remains one of the decade’s best examples.
3) Solaris (1972)

Truly great science fiction films with realistic science are rare, but Andrei Tarkovsky’s 1972 film, Solaris, is a standout example. Based on the novel by Stanislaw Lem, this thought-provoking and artistic sci-fi movie is often overlooked, despite being one of the best in the genre. Solaris shares similarities with 2001: A Space Odyssey, but focuses more on the inner lives of its characters, creating a complex and emotionally resonant story. It’s a timeless and exceptional film, widely considered one of the finest sci-fi movies of the 1970s.
2) Star Wars (1977)

As a huge fan, it’s amazing to think that the original Star Wars is still one of the biggest sci-fi hits ever when you adjust for ticket prices today! It really makes sense, though, because everyone still loves it. And it’s not just the first movie – the whole franchise George Lucas started in 1977 is just massive and one of the most important in sci-fi history. Sure, the original isn’t perfect perfect, but when it comes to how much it impacted our culture and filmmaking, it’s a flawless sci-fi classic that really defined a generation.
1) Alien (1979)

Ridley Scott is known for science fiction films, but his 1979 movie Alien is widely considered his finest work in the genre. This terrifying and tightly-paced horror film established many now-common sci-fi themes, and most notably introduced the Xenomorph – the iconic and frightening alien creature that continues to scare viewers today. Alien is a truly outstanding film, and nearly fifty years later, it still ranks among the best science fiction movies ever created.
