Viewers are loving ‘The Other Bennet Sister,’ and it’s become the BBC’s most popular new drama in the last year, with its ratings consistently increasing.
The show’s success is clear: after 28 days, a combined total of 7.3 million people watched the first episode on BBC One and iPlayer.
Actually, over half of those viewers are watching via iPlayer, which further proves that people are increasingly switching from traditional TV to streaming services for their shows.
This period drama, adapted from Janice Hadlow’s novel, expands on the world of Jane Austen’s Pride & Prejudice by focusing on the often-forgotten character of Mary Bennet.
Ella Bruccoleri, known for her role in Call the Midwife, stars in this story which reveals what Mary Bennet was doing during the time of Pride & Prejudice. It follows her as she leaves her family to build a new life for herself in London.
As a huge fan of good drama, I was so pleased to hear that The Other Bennet Sister has really connected with audiences. It’s fantastic when a show truly resonates with people, and I’m thrilled it’s found such a warm reception!

Ella Brucolleri’s portrayal of Mary is captivating, and while Mary may have felt neglected by her family within the story, the audience has clearly fallen in love with her. It’s a wonderful thing to see!
Jane Tranter, CEO of Bad Wolf, also shared that it was a truly enjoyable experience to introduce a new generation to Jane Austen through this BBC production.
Mary Bennet started as a shy, overlooked character, but she’s now deservedly the center of attention. We’re incredibly grateful to the BBC for allowing us to create this, and to the talented and supportive Bad Wolf team in Cardiff for everything they did.
Even though the show has done well, it’s not a guarantee there will be another season.
Sarah Quintrell, the lead writer for The Other Bennet Sister (also known for The Power), shared with The TopMob Writers’ Room that she’s eager to explore similar creative approaches in the future – specifically, finding fresh perspectives when telling stories.
This ten-episode series fully adapts the novel, so any future seasons would need to tell a completely new story. Currently, there are no signs that this will happen.
Joining the cast of The Other Bennet Sister are popular actors Ruth Jones, known for Gavin & Stacey, Richard E Grant from The Thursday Murder Club, Laurie Davidson of The Girlfriend, and Varada Sethu, who starred in Doctor Who.
The Other Bennet Sister is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
