Many people expected the Steam Machine to be available by early 2026, but that date has passed. Valve is still developing the project, leaving some to question what’s happening with the next version of the Steam Deck. Fortunately, according to Valve programmer Pierre-Loup Griffais, a new version is in development.
In an interview with IGN, Valve’s Lawrence Yang explained the company isn’t just planning a simple update to the Steam Deck. Although they are actively developing the Steam Deck 2, he believes it will take some time before the new version offers enough improvements to make upgrading worthwhile for current owners.
Looking back at our hardware development, you can see a clear progression from the first Steam Controller and Steam Machine to the Steam Deck, and now to our current and upcoming projects. We anticipate that the Steam Deck 2 will follow this pattern, benefiting from everything we’re learning now.
As a big fan, one of the things I’m really hoping for with the next version is better battery life – the current one is notorious for dying mid-game! But apparently, the team isn’t focused on releasing a new model every year. Designer Lawrence Yang explained that they’re waiting for a significant jump in processing power without making the battery life any worse. They want a real breakthrough, not just a small upgrade.
Although a Steam Deck 2 is planned, it likely won’t offer a significant performance improvement over the original Steam Deck. It’s best to wait for a console that truly offers a better experience, and we’re willing to be patient. Good news, though: the Steam Controller is launching on May 4th for $99.
