The First 10 Members of DC’s Justice Society, Ranked by Power

In 1940, issue #3 of All-Star Comics revolutionized DC Comics by introducing the Justice Society of America. This team was the very first group of superheroes in comic book history, and it went on to inspire many others, like the Justice League, X-Men, and Avengers. The original members of the JSA were the Flash, Hawkman, Green Lantern, Doctor Fate, Sandman, Spectre, Atom, and Hourman. As a team, they used their amazing abilities to fight against the Axis Powers, dangerous scientists, and evil magic users during World War II. Because of the constant threats, the Justice Society grew to include even more heroes from the Golden Age of comics.

The Justice Society is a truly iconic superhero team, and its impact can still be felt today with new heroes carrying on its name. Here’s a ranking of the original ten members, based on their power levels, presented in the order they first appeared in comics – ignoring any later changes DC Comics made to their history.

10) Atom

The very first Atom, Al Pratt, wasn’t like the Atoms who came after him – he didn’t have superpowers or high-tech equipment. He earned the name ‘Atom’ just because he was a small man. Despite his size, Al Pratt was a highly skilled boxer and gymnast, capable of defeating multiple, much larger opponents. He briefly did have super strength and the ability to shrink, but those powers didn’t last and were later erased from his history. Although a fantastic fighter and a key member of the original Justice Society of America, his lack of special abilities ultimately puts him at a disadvantage compared to his teammates.

9) Sandman

Wesley Dodds, known as Sandman, was the detective for the Justice Society and a frightening figure to criminals. While his only actual superpower is having unpredictable, prophetic dreams about future crimes, he compensates with sharp detective skills, martial arts training, and a distinctive weapon. Sandman is famous for his Gas Gun, which releases sleeping gas to quickly incapacitate opponents. Without it, he’s a physically capable fighter with average human strengths and weaknesses.

8) Hourman

Rex Tyler appears to be an ordinary man for most of the day, but for one hour, he transforms into the incredibly powerful Hourman. As a gifted chemist, Rex created a drug called Miraclo that grants users superhuman strength, resilience, speed, and endurance for a limited time. Though only lasting an hour, this boost allows Hourman to perform amazing feats like lifting vehicles and surviving intense gunfire. However, Miraclo has two major downsides: he can only take a pill every 24 hours, and the drug is highly addictive, limiting his abilities.

7) Hawkman

I’ve always been fascinated by Hawkman, or Carter Hall! He’s truly a force to be reckoned with – a seasoned warrior with a history stretching back millennia. Imagine remembering all your past lives – both as an Egyptian prince and an alien fighter! That’s what gives him such incredible combat skills. He doesn’t just rely on experience, though. With his Nth Metal harness and mace, he can fly and possesses unbelievable strength, toughness, and senses, plus he heals incredibly fast. What’s even cooler is that his mace can actually cancel out magic! He’s strong enough to lift cars and can go toe-to-toe with powerhouses like Black Adam. And honestly, I love that he fights with such ferocity – he never pulls his punches when that mace is in his hands.

6) Starman

Ted Knight was a gifted scientist who invented a device capable of capturing the energy of stars. Originally called the Gravity Rod, and later the Cosmic Rod, this invention granted its user extraordinary powers. As the hero Starman, Ted could use the Cosmic Rod to fly, control metal, generate protective shields, unleash powerful energy beams, travel between dimensions, and even create objects like a Green Lantern ring. At its strongest, the Cosmic Rod possessed energy exceeding that of a nuclear bomb. Though Ted Knight perished in battle, his legacy continues through the Rod, which has been wielded by numerous other heroes.

5) Flash

Jay Garrick, the original Flash and founder of the Justice Society, was the very first hero with super speed. A lab accident gave him a connection to the Speed Force, granting him incredible velocity. While not as fast as later Flashes like Barry Allen and Wally West, Jay is a highly experienced member of the Flash Family. Like other speedsters, he can run thousands of times faster than sound, create powerful tornadoes with his speed, become intangible, heal quickly, and even generate lightning. At top speed, Jay can even travel through time. Thanks to his connection to the Speed Force, he’s faster than most of his teammates in the Justice Society.

4) Green Lantern

Alan Scott, known as Green Lantern, is a powerful hero despite not being part of the usual Green Lantern Corps. Instead of a typical Green Lantern ring, he wields the Starheart – a magical, living source of incredible energy. The Starheart gives Alan almost unlimited power, letting him create anything he can imagine, read minds, become invisible, fly, teleport, and even travel through time. He’s proven his strength by defeating other Lanterns and holding back powerful heroes like Power Girl and Supergirl at the same time. Although the Starheart can be harmed by wood, this weakness doesn’t significantly diminish Alan’s impressive and adaptable abilities.

3) Johnny Thunder and Thunderbolt

Facing a boy with an incredibly powerful genie is a real challenge. Johnny Thunder, the very first member of the Justice Society, uses a magic pen. When he yells “Cei-U,” he calls forth Yz, a powerful electric genie also known as Thunderbolt. Once summoned, Thunderbolt can grant Johnny almost any wish, but only for an hour. Even with this limit, Thunderbolt is incredibly strong – he can shoot massive lightning bolts, change reality, and even grow so large he could hold the moon! Although Thunderbolt can’t directly cause death and takes commands very literally, Johnny has had years of practice learning how to get the genie to do exactly what he needs.

2) Doctor Fate

Doctor Fate, DC Comics’ master of the mystic arts, is one of the most powerful magical heroes in existence. Originally Kent Nelson, he received training from the god-like Nabu and merged his soul with him through the Helmet of Fate. As Doctor Fate, he’s Earth’s primary protector against incredibly powerful, otherworldly threats like the Lords of Chaos. He can perform a vast array of spells, including time travel, controlling gravity and the elements, creating illusions, and even possessing others. Doctor Fate has demonstrated incredible feats of power, from destroying planets to saving the universe from annihilation, solidifying his place as DC’s ultimate magical champion.

1) Spectre

Even with a team full of heroes, the Justice Society of America has never seen anyone like the Spectre. Linked to the spirit of the late detective Jim Corrigan, the Spectre delivers divine punishment to the guilty. As the Spirit of Vengeance, he’s almost all-powerful and can easily change reality itself. He’s demonstrated incredible feats, like destroying entire nations, battling the immensely powerful Anti-Monitor as an equal, completely freezing over Hell, wielding planets as weapons, stripping magic from the universe, and preventing a collision between two universes. All of this makes the Spectre one of the most powerful beings in the entire DC Multiverse.
