2022’s M3GAN, a movie about a deadly AI-controlled doll, became extremely popular (and generated countless memes). Given its success, it was only natural for a sequel to follow, titled M3GAN 2.0. In this installment, it appears that an emotionally vacant, malicious sex doll embarks on a full-scale war against a more attractive, advanced model. These events have sparked speculation that the plot may have been influenced by Megan Markle and Kate Middleton.
In contrast to the catastrophic ending of the first movie, which seemingly annihilated M3GAN, the sequel discloses that either her DNA or her AI programming survived. However, for Gemma (Allison Williams), whose robotics engineering laid the foundation for Megan’s creation, this survival has brought nothing but turmoil. Two years have passed since then, and in this continuation of the story, the AI program behind Megan is now controlled by a clandestine government agency. They developed another doll named ‘Amelia’, using her to execute lethal missions. Yet, when Amelia turns against them, eliminating anyone potentially harmful, Gemma and her niece Cady find themselves targeted.
In this sequel, directed and co-written by Gerard Johnstone, the plot becomes significantly complex, involving government agents and a high-tech corporation aiming to acquire Gemma’s business. However, as Gemma and her two colleagues, along with Cady, navigate these intricate situations, they find themselves in peril when M3GAN convinces them to revive her, not for play this time, but to safeguard them from the even deadlier AI doll, Amelia.
Similar to its predecessor, this movie veers away from pure horror and leans more towards action, but it significantly increases the humor. There are numerous funny moments that draw inspiration from Steven Seagal films and a hilarious adaptation of Kate Bush’s ‘This Woman’s Work’, a song that was originally deep and emotionally impactful, but is now humorously reinterpreted here. To make things even better, Jemaine Clement, who always delivers a fantastic performance, returns as the antagonist in this film. He plays a wheelchair-bound CEO with an AI chip in his brain.
In two hours, the film leans towards being longer and exhibits a considerable amount of cheesy or low-budget elements, yet it boasts a substantial budget and follows the standard Hollywood approach. Despite this, an ending lecture on the perils of AI cannot be avoided. However, disregarding that, M3GAN 2.0 offers plenty of entertainment with a focus on humor rather than horror.
