Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, the new Michael Jackson biopic, simply titled ‘Michael,’ had a hugely successful opening weekend, breaking box office records.
I’m so thrilled with how well the new Michael Jackson movie is doing! It’s incredible – starring Michael’s nephew, Jaafar, it brought in a whopping $97 million here in the US and $217 million worldwide just during its opening weekend! That’s a new record for musical biopics, and it’s so well-deserved. I’m really happy for the Jackson family and all the fans!
The record was previously held by Bohemian Rhapsody, which took a total of $124m in 2018.
Michael’s film surpassed $180 million at the box office, exceeding the earnings of 2024’s Oppenheimer and becoming the highest-grossing biographical film ever made.
Written by John Logan, known for his work on Skyfall, and produced by Graham King, who brought us Bohemian Rhapsody, this film explores twenty years of the singer’s remarkable life and career. It traces his journey from childhood fame with the Jackson 5 to his success as a solo artist.
Critics have heavily criticised the film, arguing that it presents an overly polished and simplified portrayal of Michael Jackson’s life, and avoids addressing serious and troubling accusations, including those of sexual abuse.

Our review gave the film two stars, criticizing its simple plot and overly sentimental, poorly developed scenes. Critic Terry Staunton noted that while the filmmakers have suggested a sequel might explore the sexual abuse allegations and legal proceedings, their omission in this film leaves the ending feeling incomplete and unsatisfying.
Jafaar is part of a talented cast that also includes Juliano Krue Valdi as young Michael Jackson, Colman Domingo as Joe Jackson, Nia Long as Katherine Jackson, Miles Teller as John Branca, and Laura Harrier as Suzanne de Passe, among others.
