With the upcoming release of Avengers: Doomsday, Robert Downey Jr. has revealed why he’s returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe – but this time as the villain. At San Diego Comic-Con 2024, Marvel announced the plans for the final films in the Multiverse Saga, including the next two Avengers movies. While the Russo brothers, who directed Avengers: Endgame, are returning to direct, the biggest news was Downey Jr.’s return – not as Iron Man, but as Doctor Doom, the franchise’s next major antagonist.
Honestly, when the announcement dropped, the reaction was pretty split. It was awesome seeing Robert Downey Jr. back in the Marvel universe, especially since he basically started it all. But a lot of people felt like Marvel was relying too much on nostalgia and his famous name to get folks excited. Things had already been a bit rocky with the Multiverse Saga, and the Jonathan Majors situation – losing Kang, who was supposed to be the next big bad like Thanos – definitely didn’t help. Now, with Avengers: Doomsday almost here, Downey Jr. sat down with Bran Ferren for Conversations for our Daughters and finally explained what really made him decide to come back to the MCU after Avengers: Endgame.
He explained that he intentionally chose roles that were different from what people expected of him, believing he had the range to play a wide variety of characters. He felt like sometimes opportunities arise where someone recognizes potential you didn’t even know you had and takes a chance on you – which can be daunting! He also believes that a sense of responsibility, combined with a desire to prove yourself, can push you to achieve great things. He worked incredibly hard to be fully prepared, aiming to meet the high standards of a director like Sydney Lumet.
I’m starting to explore new opportunities, and I feel like after my previous work, I’ve earned a unique position – one where I can contribute in ways that aren’t typical for a hired performer. This reminds me of Charlie Chaplin’s transition to sound, which was all in service of making his powerful film, The Great Dictator. Similarly, after playing Tony Stark for so long, I’m returning to the Marvel universe. This time, without the specific support I had on Oppenheimer – Lewis Strauss and Christopher Nolan’s backing – it feels right to explore this world again. What really excites me now is looking behind the scenes, understanding how things work on a grand scale, and not shying away from ambitious projects.
How Downey’s Reason For Returning To The MCU Makes Avengers: Doomsday More Exciting

Understanding Robert Downey Jr.’s reasons for returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe – and how his work on Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer influenced that decision – eases worries that this is simply a nostalgic attempt to revive the franchise. Downey Jr. consistently delivered strong performances throughout his 11 years as Iron Man, even in films where he wasn’t the main focus, so it was never about a lack of talent. It’s reassuring to know that his return to the MCU was driven by a genuine artistic desire.
It’s interesting how Robert Downey Jr. intentionally transformed his appearance for the role of Strauss in Oppenheimer, because that same approach seems to be happening with his portrayal of Doctor Doom. The trailer for Avengers: Doomsday revealed that Downey Jr. is using an accent for the role, immediately setting it apart from his performance as Tony Stark. Plus, Doctor Doom is known for his scarred and disfigured face in the comics, and it sounds like the movie will follow that same visual approach. Ultimately, Downey Jr. seems focused on making this character completely different from anything audiences have seen from him before. This is crucial, because people are so familiar with him as Iron Man, and it was important to create a truly distinct character.
Let’s be real, Robert Downey Jr.’s performance is going to be huge for the success of Avengers: Doomsday. Thankfully, both he and Marvel have a history of making bold choices and delivering when it matters – remember how risky Iron Man was back in 2008? Now, almost two decades later, they really need to nail it again to keep the Marvel Cinematic Universe strong.
Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026.
