15 Years Later, Tom Hardy’s Warrior Officially Comes to Free Streaming After Flopping in Theaters

As the weather warms up, fans have plenty to look forward to! The popular actor has a number of well-known movies and TV shows, but one of his lesser-known films, Warrior from 2011, is getting a lot of attention as we head into May.

Even the film’s creator, Hardy, acknowledges that it didn’t perform well in cinemas – a fate shared by Warrior, which only earned $23.3 million worldwide despite costing $25 million to make.

Despite positive reviews – critics gave Warrior an 84% approval rating, and audiences loved it even more with 92% on Rotten Tomatoes from over 100,000 reviews – the film didn’t perform as expected. Now, everyone will be able to watch it for free when it becomes available on the streaming service Plex on May 1st.

Tom Hardy’s Warrior Is Finally Free to Stream

The 2011 film, directed by Gavin O’Connor (known for The Accountant), features Tom Hardy, along with acclaimed actors Joel Edgerton and Nick Nolte. Both Hardy and Edgerton are also skilled in mixed martial arts.

The two have built up a lot of bad feelings towards each other, and things finally explode when they’re forced to fight. It’s a deeply personal battle where the emotional impact is as strong as the physical blows.

According to Edgerton, the fight choreography in the film felt genuine because of his own background. He told LoveFilm.com that he had a black belt in Shudokan karate as a child, but even that didn’t fully prepare him for the specific demands of mixed martial arts in the movie. He felt his previous sports experience combined with his karate training were the best preparation he had.

Hardy agreed, mostly: “Same, but I didn’t have a black belt.”

Warrior Is ‘In Its Own Special Bracket’

Before becoming famous as Bane in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, Tom Hardy starred in Warrior. He feels that Warrior was particularly important, not just because it involved a fight between two brothers, but because it physically prepared him for the demanding role of Bane. He considers the 2011 film with Edgerton to be a special project.

He explained that the movie has two main elements. There’s an exciting race between a red car and a blue car, driven by two brothers – it’s full of action and entertainment. But more importantly, the film focuses on a family struggling to come together, heal old wounds, and find a way forward. They’re dealing with a serious illness that has affected generations of their family, raising questions about whether it’s due to genetics or other factors.

Hardy explained that the film doesn’t rely on chance; it explores the cycle of a family marked by hard work, heavy drinking, and abuse, and ultimately, the struggle to break free from that pattern. He felt this unique focus set the film apart from other boxing movies, giving it a special quality.

The bonus content will be available on Plex within a few days, and it’s worth revisiting for fans of action movies – or anyone who wants a reminder of its impact.
