As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but acknowledge that the brilliant minds behind the latest Prime Video thriller, “The Assassin,” are none other than the prolific duo, Harry and Jack Williams. Their portfolio includes captivating series such as “The Missing” and “The Boat Story.
Another show they produced that left fans astonished upon its 2022 premiere is “The Tourist,” a BBC thriller centering around an Irish man who, after suffering from amnesia following a car accident, finds himself in an Australian hospital.
Over the course of two distinct periods, one taking place in Ireland, the series explored the backstory of the character portrayed by Jamie Dornan, while simultaneously depicting his escape from pursuing threats. Additionally, it showed him developing a bond with Helen Chambers, a character played by Danielle Macdonald, whom he encountered during her probationary period as a constable.
In the final episode of the second season, there was a dramatic twist when viewers learned through a blazing paper that nobody else had seen, that the character played by Dornan, Eugene Cassidy, seemed to have hidden past as an undercover agent.
Ever since the airing of that series, there hasn’t been much news about it coming back for a third season – but recently, we finally have some updates!
In a chat for “The TopMob Writers’ Room,” our video interview segment where we explore what motivates writers and delve into their past works, the Williams brothers shared their thoughts on the possibility of Season 3. Regrettably, they don’t seem very optimistic about it.
Jack expressed that Jamie is fantastic and they enjoyed the activity. He finds it challenging to come up with an idea for another one. If Jamie were to approach them saying, “I’m eager to do it again,” they would consider giving it a shot because it could be enjoyable. However, they would need to ensure it turns out well, but they don’t think it’s something they’d actively pursue on their own.
Jack pointed out that the closing scene with the fire hinted at Eugene’s true identity, but he suggested it served as a playful, additional detail implying that all along, Eugene was indeed this particular character.
In my opinion, the film transitions into a familiar territory, becoming somewhat predictable. There were moments when it seemed to drag, feeling rather uneventful. However, towards the end, it seems like our protagonist was engaged in some kind of espionage work, and he indeed demonstrated an array of skills we’ve come to expect from such stories.
Harry implied throughout the series that Eugene lacked any discernible talents, but this was debunked by Jack who pointed out that it was all part of a running gag; Eugene, in truth, was exceptionally skilled as a dancer.
Jack mentioned: “One recurring element from the earlier series that reappears in the current one is a joke we made. It’s about people who lose their memory, and they often become surprisingly proficient at things – just like Gina Davis in The Long Kiss Goodnight or Matt Damon in Bourne, they had skills they didn’t realize they possessed.
We joked about the idea that he was exceptionally skilled at dancing and found it quite humorous. I don’t believe it resonated with others in the same way, but we found it entertaining. That’s why the final episode of season 2 features him dancing extremely well. It may be the reason why not many people tuned in, but for us, it was amusing.
We’d certainly attempt it since he’s exceptionally talented and the cast of that series is wonderful, not to mention Macdonald being equally impressive. It was an enjoyable experience for us. However, it might prove challenging, perhaps even impossible. But if he insists, we’re ready to take a shot at it.
In another conversation within the “Writers’ Room of TopMob”, the Williams brothers discussed their projects – ‘The Missing’, their upcoming series titled ‘The Assassin’ featuring Keeley Hawes and Freddie Highmore, along with their production roles in ‘Fleabag’.
You can catch the complete interview of Harry and Jack Williams with The TopMob Writers’ Room on Friday, July 25th.
On this coming Friday, 25th July, the movie titled “The Assassin” will be available to stream on Amazon Prime Video. If you haven’t already, consider signing up today for a complimentary 30-day trial of Amazon Prime Video to catch the premiere!
