The third season of House of the Dragon is significantly altering the original book’s storyline, impacting the overall narrative. While the show has always taken liberties with George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood – which is written as a historical text with gaps and incomplete character development – these changes were often necessary for adaptation. Some alterations improve the story for television, but others have proven divisive, even drawing criticism from Martin regarding Season 2.
While many things shifted throughout the conflict, three changes were especially important in shaping the war between King Aegon II Targaryen and Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen. The first was a misunderstanding of King Viserys’ final words by Alicent Hightower, which introduced Aegon the Conqueror’s dream into the story and fundamentally altered the reasons for the civil war.
Aemond Targaryen’s intentional attack on Aegon at the Battle of Rook’s Rest significantly altered the political landscape for the Greens, especially since Aegon was wounded. Also, the ongoing, complex relationship between Rhaenyra and Alicent continues – they meet in both King’s Landing and Dragonstone, and Alicent promises to allow Rhaenyra entry, though it’s unclear if she’ll actually follow through.
As a huge fan of House of the Dragon, I was really intrigued by the Season 3 trailer. It looks like they’re really leaning into the conflict between Aemond and Aegon that started brewing last season. The trailer shows Aegon, now heavily scarred, declaring he’s going to either kill his brother or die trying – it’s a seriously intense moment and sets up a major showdown, which I can’t wait to see!
King Aegon Is Forgetting Who His Real Enemy Is In House Of The Dragon

At its heart, House of the Dragon is a story about two sides battling for the Iron Throne: those supporting Aegon and those supporting Rhaenyra. While there’s plenty of family drama, political scheming, and shifting loyalties, the central conflict remains a war between them, each determined to eliminate the other’s claim to the throne. The show largely stays true to this core idea, with the exception of Aegon himself.
The only line we hear Aegon speak in the House of the Dragon Season 3 trailer is about killing his brother. This suggests that his desire for revenge against Aemond is his top priority – even more important than securing the Iron Throne for Rhaenyra. It means he’s no longer focused on the larger conflict between the Greens and Blacks, but on a personal feud. Considering Alicent might also be letting Rhaenyra take King’s Landing, this dramatically alters how we see the civil war, with Aemond effectively becoming the primary opponent to Rhaenyra’s claim.
The show takes some creative liberties with Aegon’s journey. He doesn’t have much to do between locations, and the writers needed to pace his arrival for the sake of other storylines. They also didn’t want him to disappear or lack motivation for several episodes. Introducing a rivalry with Aemond, which isn’t a major part of the books, adds an element of surprise and gives Aegon a clear reason to act – revenge.
It’s still uncertain how this new direction will actually play out. We have a good idea of where the characters’ storylines were headed, and this feels like a detour. Will Aegon suddenly abandon his plans and return to King’s Landing to confront his brother? With only eight episodes in the upcoming season, it’s questionable whether the story can be handled effectively, especially considering the larger narrative and the established history of Game of Thrones suggest the king should be focused on his half-sister, not a sibling rivalry.
It’s possible the changes will pay off. Many of the show’s alterations have been effective, and Tom Glynn-Carney’s performance as Aegon is already making the character more compelling than it was in the original material. While it’s still too early to know how everything will unfold, this storyline feels unusual, and we’ll likely get answers when Season 3 of House of the Dragon arrives on June 21, 2026.
