As April 2026 winds down, I’m getting a look at what Netflix has planned for May, and it’s shaping up to be a great month for anime fans! They’re bringing back some really popular titles, including Assassination Classroom and Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2, which haven’t been available to stream in the US before. April was already a strong month with premieres like the new anime from the creator of Gintama, called Dandelion, and the return of Dorohedoro for a second season. While the full May list isn’t out yet, Netflix just announced via their X account that Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai will be available starting May 1st, 2026. It looks like they’re really focusing on bringing some all-time classics to the platform.
The anime is now available in some countries and will be rolling out to more, so check the official website to see if it’s available in your region. It’s a fresh take on the beloved 1991 anime, created by Toei Animation. They began this reboot in 2020 to finish the story, which originally started as a manga in 1989 in Weekly Shonen Jump, written by Riku Sanjo and illustrated by Koji Inada.
What Is Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai About?

Long ago, a courageous swordsman and his friends defeated a terrifying demon, bringing peace to the land and becoming a celebrated hero. Over time, his story faded into legend. Now, the demon has returned, and once again threatens to cause widespread devastation. On a distant southern island, a young boy named Dai lives a simple life, but dreams of becoming a hero just like the one from the old stories.
When Dai learns a powerful demon has been resurrected, he and his companions dedicate themselves to stopping it and the dark forces behind its return. Throughout their adventure, the mystery unfolds, revealing the reasons for the demon’s revival, the true identity of a legendary hero, and the unique abilities that make Dai special.
The anime first aired in 1991 while the original manga was still being published, and it didn’t finish telling the complete story. The manga concluded in 1996 and became a huge success, selling over 50 million copies by 2022. Although it hasn’t been widely known in Western countries, the anime’s upcoming release is expected to change that. Instead of continuing the original anime in 2020, Toei Animation surprised everyone with a complete remake featuring updated animation and a faster pace, designed to finish the story in 100 episodes.
