Iceman’s Helmet From Top Gun Is About to Go Up For Auction on the Heels of Threequel Update

The 1986 film Top Gun launched Tom Cruise to superstardom and became a huge cultural phenomenon. Thirty-six years later, Paramount Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer successfully revived the franchise with Top Gun: Maverick, which earned an impressive $1.5 billion worldwide despite being released during the pandemic. This success has led to the announcement of Top Gun 3, currently in development. Now, with the series enjoying a renewed spotlight, a famous item from the original Top Gun is going up for sale.

Goldin auction house is holding a Spring Pop Culture Auction in May, featuring props, costumes, and memorabilia from music and film. The auction runs from May 21st to June 17th, and its most notable item is the helmet worn by the character Iceman in the movie Top Gun.

The Iceman Helmet Is One of Top Gun‘s Most Emotionally Weighted Items

In the first Top Gun movie, Tom “Iceman” Kazansky (Val Kilmer) was presented as the opposite of Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) and his daring approach to flying. Director Tony Scott used Kazansky to embody strict military precision – his nickname reflected his cool and calculated demeanor in the air. Kazansky always followed the rules of naval aviation, which led him to win the top graduate award, though he often conflicted with Mitchell’s tendency to fly by instinct. By the end of the movie, their rivalry transformed into deep respect, earned during a dangerous aerial battle over the Indian Ocean.

In Top Gun: Maverick, Iceman (Kazansky) became a high-ranking Admiral in charge of the Pacific Fleet. The film reveals he repeatedly used his influence to shield Maverick (Mitchell) from punishment, saving his career multiple times. The filmmakers also incorporated actor Val Kilmer’s real-life struggle with throat cancer into the story, resulting in his character being unable to speak without assistance. Their touching reunion showed how their relationship matured beyond youthful rivalry into a deep, lifelong bond. Iceman’s death in the movie left Maverick vulnerable and forced him to undertake a perilous final mission. Now, the Iceman helmet is being auctioned as a meaningful reminder of the character’s story and a tribute to Kilmer himself.

Goldin’s Spring Pop Culture Auction opens May 21 and closes June 17.
