I’m a huge fan of the isekai genre, and there’s one series that really kicked things off way back in 2002! It started as a novel, then blossomed into light novels, games, and, of course, amazing anime. And even though there are so many isekai anime now, the story of Kirito and Asuna just keeps getting bigger and better. They recently held a concert celebrating the whole franchise, and the big news is: a new Sword Art Online movie is officially in the works! I’m so excited to see what they do with it!
At the recent “Yuna First Live” concert, which celebrated the music from the anime Sword Art Online, it was announced that a new Sword Art Online movie is being made. While most details are still unknown, it’s been confirmed this film will tell a completely original story, not previously featured in the light novels. The last movie, Sword Art Online: Progressive – Scherzo of Deep Night, was based on existing story material, but this new film will be a fresh adventure.
Sword Art Online’s Isekai Legacy

If you’re not familiar with Sword Art Online and its huge impact on anime, it played a key role in popularizing the ‘isekai’ genre. The first season introduced Kirito, a skilled swordsman, trapped in a virtual world where death in the game means real-life death. Kirito doesn’t just briefly visit this world – he spends years growing stronger and even building relationships. While the first season tells a complete story, later seasons, movies, and spin-offs continued to explore this universe, often bringing back Kirito and Asuna.
I remember when Sword Art Online: Alicization finished airing in 2020 – it was a huge arc that really changed things for Kirito. We haven’t had a new TV series since then, but I wouldn’t be surprised if one is announced eventually. Looking back at the series, it’s always been about expanding the world with new characters and settings, and it’s definitely kept up with the growing popularity of the isekai genre. It seems like Sword Art Online has a lot more story to tell and isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
