Following the announcement of the release date and price for The Blood of Dawnwalker, creative director Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz shared additional details about the game. He revealed that players will be able to choose a completely evil path, even going so far as to eliminate many of the characters they encounter.
According to a recent Q&A, players will generally be able to kill most non-player characters (NPCs) in the game. While there are exceptions – some NPCs are protected to maintain the story’s flow – the developers intentionally allowed for widespread NPC deaths. The game will react to these actions, offering varied outcomes and different endings depending on who lives or dies. This feature was a significant topic of debate during development, with the team considering whether it aligned with the creative vision of the game’s inspiration.
We constantly balanced giving players freedom to make choices with keeping the story consistent for the character. We think we struck a good balance, and because we designed the game as an open sandbox, we generally prioritized player choice. I’m excited to see players create villainous playthroughs and how they approach the game.
I was so excited when I heard from TomaszKiewicz back in February 2025 that you’ll actually be able to kill important characters in The Blood of Dawnwalker! It makes total sense though, since the team at Rebel Wolves are really focused on giving us a game where our choices matter and we have a lot of freedom. Being able to decide the fate of NPCs is a huge part of that, and it’s awesome they’re letting us do that in this RPG.
We designed the game to be very open-ended, giving players lots of freedom to make their own choices, explained Tomaszkiewicz. However, we also wanted to build on what we do best: strong storytelling, compelling characters, and a rich, detailed world with plenty of background information. We’ve always focused on these elements in our previous games, and we wanted to do that again here.
This relates to the studio’s overall goal of creating a highly interactive story experience with The Blood of Dawnwalker. In January 2025, Tomaszkiewicz explained they want players to be able to change the story through their actions and interactions within the game world.
We call our approach to content creation ‘narrative sandbox’ – it’s about how players interact with the story. The main goal is to give players lots of choice and freedom, while still providing the strong, quality storytelling we’re known for. With Dawnwalker, we’re not aiming for a purely open-ended game focused solely on gameplay. We want players to connect with the world, the characters, and the emotions within the story. We’re also striving to give players as much freedom as possible, balancing that with a compelling narrative experience.
The action RPG The Blood of Dawnwalker will be released on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S on September 3rd. Players hoping to experience the game at 4K resolution with a smooth 60 frames per second will need an RTX 5090 graphics card, according to the game’s PC specifications.
