Valve has announced the release date and price for its Steam Controller, but people are still curious about how much the Linux-based Steam Machine will cost. Polygon reports that Valve originally planned to release both at the same time, but global memory shortages forced them to release the Steam Controller first.
As a big fan, I was really excited to hear Valve’s Steve Cardinali talk about the Steam Deck! He mentioned it doesn’t use RAM, which actually makes it simpler for them to get out the door. They’re feeling prepared for launch and were hoping to have enough units for everyone who wants one, but honestly, it sounds like demand might be way higher than they even thought – which is awesome, but also a little nerve-wracking as a fan hoping to snag one!
Valve always intended to release the Steam Controller, Steam Machine, and Steam Frame in stages, and he confirmed that this plan remained consistent.
From the start, the Steam Machine and Steam Controller were always separate products. While we wanted them to work seamlessly together – they were designed to complement each other – there was no intention to release them at the same time. Our main priority was ensuring the Steam Controller was available before the Steam Machine, so users could enjoy both together. We didn’t feel the need to delay the Controller’s release while we finalized everything else with the Machine.
It appears the Steam Machine is facing problems with rising costs. Valve insider Brad Lynch reports that the price of the pre-built gaming PC has increased significantly, reportedly due to difficulties and expenses related to obtaining enough RAM.
According to what I’ve heard, Valve had internal pricing goals for its Steam Deck both before and after RAM prices increased significantly. The ‘Machine’ model seems to be the most impacted by these changes, while the ‘Frame’ model hasn’t been affected as much.
I was so excited when Valve finally announced the release date and price for the Steam Controller! It looks like a couple of reviews went live a little early, but now it’s official: it’ll be available on May 4th and will cost $99. I’ve been waiting for this for a long time!
Valve hasn’t said much about the Steam Machine since announcing a delay in February. However, they’ve stated they still plan to release all three models in the first six months of the year.
As a big fan, I was happy to hear from Valve that they’re still planning to release all three products within the first six months of the year! They said they’re just working out the final details – like exactly how much everything will cost and when we can actually get our hands on it. They want to be sure they have solid dates before announcing anything, because things can change quickly, and they promise to keep us updated as soon as they’ve finalized everything. I’m excited and hoping for more news soon!
There’s no confirmed release date yet for either the Steam Machine or the Steam Frame.
Valve told Polygon they’re releasing the Steam Controller sooner than planned because they’re having trouble getting enough RAM for their other devices. Sources say Valve had internal price goals before RAM prices suddenly increased. The ‘Machine’ device is being impacted the most by the RAM shortage, but the ‘Frame’ device isn’t as affected.
