For years, a sequel to ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ seemed impossible, as Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway weren’t interested in revisiting their roles. However, nearly 20 years later, it’s happening! The original director, David Frankel, is back, and so are the four main stars – including Emily Blunt, who had a breakout performance in the first film, and Stanley Tucci.
Both Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt’s characters have seen their careers flourish. Hathaway’s character, Andy Sachs, is now a celebrated features writer, while Blunt’s Emily Charlton leads a major designer brand’s New York offices. However, trouble arises when Hathaway’s magazine is shut down for financial reasons. Simultaneously, Meryl Streep’s character, Miranda Priestley, faces a scandal involving unethical labor practices at her magazine, Runway, which could ruin her career and reputation, especially as news of the controversy breaks right before a major promotion announcement.
Runway’s owner hired Andy as a features writer hoping she could improve Miranda’s public image and explain why Miranda’s promotion had been postponed. To Miranda’s annoyance, Andy was given a storage closet as her office, and the competitive, often unpleasant, office dynamics began.
The four main actors deliver excellent performances, as expected. Meryl Streep is sharp and commanding, Stanley Tucci provides a calming presence, Anne Hathaway plays a gifted writer striving to do her best despite unfair treatment, and Emily Blunt continues to portray insecurity hidden behind a cool exterior influenced by Streep’s character. The supporting cast is strong, particularly Justin Theroux as Blunt’s naive but rich fiancé, though some characters, like Simone Ashley as Miranda’s assistant, Caleb Hearon as the desk-bound second assistant, and Helen J Shen as a cheerful intern, could have benefited from more screen time. Kenneth Branagh’s talent feels underused as Miranda’s husband. The film is a fashion lover’s dream, filled with recognizable faces like Lady Gaga and Donatella Versace, as well as many lesser-known industry figures. The costumes are predictably stunning, though occasionally a bit over-the-top, bordering on the style seen in ‘Zoolander’.
The publishing world has transformed dramatically in the past two decades. While newspapers and magazines are losing readers, digital media is booming. It’s concerning that so much high-quality journalism is being overlooked in favor of often unreliable content on platforms like Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), and TikTok, and this is negatively impacting an entire generation.
I was really struck by a few lines in the movie, especially what Miranda said about how much of her kids’ lives she’d missed while focusing on her career. It really hit home – she pointed out that loving your work does come at a cost. And honestly, in a world obsessed with climbing the career ladder, it was refreshing to see a film that actually celebrated journalism.
The movie’s timing feels a bit uneven, and while the story has good intentions, it isn’t always captivating. However, the four lead actors deliver excellent performances. Fans of the original will appreciate the many references and inside jokes, though the romantic subplot involving Hathaway feels forced and doesn’t quite work. Overall, those who’ve been hoping for a sequel won’t be disappointed with The Devil Wears Prada 2.
