Navigating grief is never easy, and there’s an added complication in doing so in the public eye.
After her husband, Uche Ojeh, passed away in May 2025, Sheinelle Jones could have chosen to grieve privately, away from public view. Instead, she’s bravely decided to openly share her experiences and journey with others.
Because for the Today host , there really was no other option but honesty.
Sheinelle, 48, recently shared with TopMob News that it’s important for her to be open about her struggles. She’s learned that when people we look up to—those who seem to have it all together—are honest about their own difficult times, it can be incredibly helpful. She realized she had underestimated the power of that kind of vulnerability and honesty to heal and connect with others.
Sharing her story has been a healing process for both those who watch and for herself. She’s been very open about her experiences, from discussing her husband Uche’s cancer journey with Savannah Guthrie on Today, to honestly expressing her feelings in an Instagram post on her first birthday since his passing.
Sheinelle also learned the importance of honesty and fully embracing her feelings, a lesson inspired by Matthew McConaughey’s mother, Kay McConaughey. Kay shared her insights in Sheinelle’s new book, Through Mom’s Eyes: Simple Wisdom From Mothers Who Raised Extraordinary Humans, which is available now.

Sheinelle believes in the importance of laughter. She shared that she tries to live in the moment and enjoy herself when she’s on TV, and also allows herself to feel down if she’s having a difficult day. She really takes this idea to heart.
It admittedly took a moment for her to internalize the significance of what she was doing.
She remembered people constantly telling her how strong she was, but she felt like she was simply doing what she needed to just get through each day. Initially, even getting out of bed was a struggle. She’d tell herself, ‘I have to go to work,’ and force herself to do it, one step at a time.
She explained that it’s strange when others perceive your necessary actions as strength. She found herself questioning if that was actually true, thinking, ‘Am I really strong? Is that how it looks?’
Considering everything Sheinelle has accomplished this past year – publishing her book and co-hosting Today with Jenna & Sheinelle with Jenna Bush Hager – especially while dealing with her loss, she feels it’s time to acknowledge her own hard work and achievements.
She realized she’d been so focused on acknowledging others’ strengths that she hadn’t taken time to celebrate her own. She’s now starting to recognize that she deserves credit for overcoming challenges, admitting it hasn’t been easy and that she needs to prioritize self-acknowledgment.

Sheinelle wants to raise her children – 16-year-old Kayin Ojeh and 13-year-old twins Clara and Uche Ojeh – with the same inner strength she admires in others.
She encouraged everyone by saying that if she could pursue her dreams on national television – writing a book and discussing her passions – then anyone can achieve their goals. Whether it’s running for student council, trying out for a sports team, or auditioning for a role, she believes everyone is capable of taking a chance and pursuing what they care about.
She explained that she’s striving to be a role model for them, hoping to demonstrate resilience, humor, and strength. While it’s challenging, that’s her main goal.

She hopes readers will feel as inspired, comforted, and connected while reading Through Mom’s Eyes as she felt while writing it.
She explained that reading the book was unexpectedly helpful. The chapters resonated with her and provided comfort, especially because she was focused on helping others at the time. It ended up benefiting her in two ways – offering support while she was trying to support someone else.
The popular digital series Through Mom’s Eyes: Simple Wisdom From Mothers Who Raised Extraordinary Humans, created by Sheinelle, is now available as a book.
Let’s take a look back at some of Sheinelle and Uche’s most cherished family moments – memories that she and her children will treasure always. Keep reading to see them!

Sheinelle Jones frequently shared the story of how she met her husband, Uche Ojeh. She was 19 years old and giving him a tour of the Northwestern University campus when they first connected.
As Savannah Guthrie mentioned on Today’s May 23rd tribute, the consultant was a truly special person and Sheinelle’s ideal life partner.

During Uche’s fight with brain cancer, his colleagues at Today highlighted his strong faith and pride in his Nigerian roots. Sheinelle Jones recalled in a 2021 post that their three children all wore traditional Nigerian clothing for their baptism.

As the father of kids Kayin, and younger twins Clara and Uche Jr., Uche put his family first.
As Craig Melvin shared on Today, he loved his children more than anything. He was incredibly proud and always there for them – at every soccer game, concert, and recital. He was a very involved and supportive father.

On today’s show, Al Roker remembered Uche as a quietly hilarious and genuinely humble person.

In a 2021 birthday message for Uche, Sheinelle shared that her late husband had always been her steadfast support.
She shared on Instagram that whenever she searches for his picture on her iPhone, almost all the results show them together – either with her, or helping their kids with activities like homework, music, or sports. She expressed deep gratitude for sharing her life with him.

During a segment on Today, Savannah highlighted that Sheinelle and Uche successfully navigated challenges, including a long-distance relationship, to build a lasting romance. Sheinelle confirmed it was all worthwhile, sharing in a 2022 post about Uche, “I first noticed you when I was 19… and now look at us.”

During their most challenging time, Savannah told Sheinelle and Uche that they were both incredibly strong and resilient fighters.
You know, everyone who knew Uche always talked about his incredible spirit. As Savannah beautifully put it, he just had this joyful energy and a quiet inner strength that perfectly balanced Sheinelle. They really complemented each other – it was lovely to witness.

After sharing the news of Uche’s passing, Sheinelle expressed her gratitude for everyone’s kindness and support.
