Euphoria’s Red Wedding Has Nothing On Margo’s Got Money Troubles

Okay, HBO did it again – they delivered a wedding episode that was absolutely bonkers. This week on Euphoria, we saw Nate and Cassie actually get married, but don’t expect any happily ever after. True to the show’s style, it was packed with tension and ended with a truly shocking and violent scene. Honestly, everyone’s already calling it Euphoria‘s answer to the Red Wedding from Game of Thrones, and I think they’re right – it was that intense.

While the visuals were okay, the most exciting part of ‘The Ballad of Paladin’ was finally seeing the main characters of Euphoria together again. After the five-year time jump in season 3, they’d all been living separate lives as adults. Many critics have been disappointed with season 3, feeling it lost what made the show special, especially by moving away from the high school setting, so this episode felt like a welcome change.

Apple TV’s new miniseries, Margo’s Got Money Troubles, is receiving a lot of positive attention. Based on the popular novel by Rufi Thorpe, it currently has a remarkable 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes – a stark contrast to the 41% rating of Euphoria season 3. Since its debut on April 15th, the show has quickly become a hit with viewers, making it into Apple TV’s top 10 most-watched programs globally.

Elle Fanning delivers what many are calling her best performance yet in Margo’s Got Money Troubles, playing Margo, a 19-year-old mother who turns to OnlyFans to provide for her baby. The film also features a strong supporting cast, notably Michelle Pfeiffer as Margo’s mother, Shyanne—a former Hooters waitress determined to see her daughter succeed where she didn’t.

Both Margo’s Got Money Troubles and the upcoming season of Euphoria share similar themes, including characters who engage in online sex work. Interestingly, the latest episode of Margo’s Got Money Troubles, titled “Flamingos,” also features a wedding, adding another point of connection between the two shows.

This week’s episode, set in Las Vegas, features Shyanne marrying her boyfriend, Kenny—a sweet and religious man played by Greg Kinnear. Though there was drama leading up to the wedding, it doesn’t end tragically like the Red Wedding in Euphoria. Margo’s Got Money Troubles delivers a much richer and more complex story.

The Wedding In Margo’s Got Money Troubles Has A Heart That Euphoria Lacks

The weddings in Euphoria and Margo’s Got Money Troubles seemed worlds apart. Cassie envisioned a lavish wedding and spared no expense to make it over-the-top. From the massive flower arrangements to the constant flow of champagne and caviar, and even a life-sized ice sculpture of the bride and groom, everything was designed to be extravagant.

Compared to Nate’s over-the-top wedding, Shyanne and Kenny’s was seriously low-key – I’m pretty sure it cost less than just one of Nate’s boutonnieres! In episode 5 of Margo’s Got Money Troubles, they eloped to Vegas for a super simple Elvis wedding, with Margo being the only one there to witness it.

The weddings weren’t just different on the surface; Nate and Cassie’s ceremony, despite all the extravagance, felt as empty as their relationship. While the episode hinted at interesting emotional beats – like Nate’s pre-wedding anxiety and Suze’s sad comments about marriage – it prioritized looking good over truly exploring these moments, leaving them underdeveloped.

The wedding in Margo’s Got Money Troubles isn’t nearly as dramatic—Shyanne keeps some secrets from her future husband, but a little drinking and gambling won’t cause a serious consequence. Even though it’s a less intense situation, Shyanne and Kenny’s wedding story feels twice as genuine and touching as Nate and Cassie’s.

Okay, so “Margo” isn’t about cheap thrills; the drama feels genuinely human. We see Shyanne bending over backwards to be what she thinks Kenny wants, and that leads to a really raw confrontation with Margo over her work on OnlyFans. It’s definitely not a relaxing vacation for anyone involved, but what really struck me was how much these characters, despite everything, clearly care for each other. It’s a messy, believable love that drives the story.

Even though Shyanne said some unkind things, Margo focused on her love for her mother instead of letting her anger take over. She was clearly touched by the ceremony and offered warm wishes to the newlyweds. The episode “Flamingoes” helps us learn more about the show’s characters, but “The Ballad of Paladin” unfortunately reinforces some of the flatness seen in season 3 of Euphoria.

The most compelling story in the recent Euphoria episode unfolded subtly. Maddy continues to stand out as the strongest character in season 3, and her experience at the wedding perfectly illustrates this. She arrived intending to make a statement with her outfit, but was visibly heartbroken watching her former boyfriend marry her old best friend. This scene showed how much she’s grown – instead of causing a dramatic outburst like she might have in the past, she simply left without a fuss.

Both Euphoria and Margo’s Got Money Troubles share a similar moment: a character secretly watching a wedding while clearly still hung up on someone else – Jinx plays this role in Margo’s Got Money Troubles. When Bodhi observes the ceremony, it’s obvious he hasn’t moved on from Shyanne. Like Maddy in Euphoria, he keeps his feelings hidden and lets the couple enjoy their day. This quiet act is unusual for Euphoria, but it highlights the surprising warmth at the core of Margo’s Got Money Troubles.
