7 DC Heroes That Have Actually Beaten Batman

Batman is widely considered one of the world’s best fighters. He spent ten years traveling the globe, mastering countless skills from the most renowned instructors. When he returned to Gotham City, he had transformed himself into an incredibly versatile force. He’s an expert in everything from detective work and chemistry to martial arts and stealth, and his abilities are truly exceptional. Driven by sheer determination and intelligence, he’s even been able to overcome opponents with god-like powers. However, being proficient in so many areas means Batman doesn’t specialize in any single one. There are other heroes who are more skilled than he is in specific disciplines, and sometimes, even the greatest skill isn’t enough to overcome certain challenges.

Batman is incredibly popular and skilled, so it’s no surprise people love to compare him to other heroes and see who would win in a fight. He’s known for somehow always managing to come out on top, even when the odds are stacked against him. But even Batman isn’t invincible. Let’s look at seven superheroes who have actually beaten him in battle – some have even defeated him multiple times. Here’s a rundown of Batman’s toughest fights and his defeats.

7) Superman

It’s no surprise that Superman and Batman sometimes clash. As DC’s most well-known heroes, they approach crime-fighting in very different ways, so conflicts are bound to happen. Batman has prepared himself to stop Superman if he ever becomes a threat, but Superman’s immense strength gives him a clear advantage. A good example of this is in Batman: The Dark Knight #5 (2011), where Batman, under the influence of Venom and Fear Toxin, attacked Superman. When talking didn’t work, Superman quickly subdued him with a single punch.

6) Nightwing

Batman and his first sidekick, Nightwing, have clashed in battles many times throughout their history. Dick Grayson, the original Boy Wonder, has clearly learned everything Batman taught him – and even surpassed his mentor, occasionally defeating the Dark Knight himself. One particularly intense fight, detailed in Nightwing (2011) #30, involved Bruce Wayne convincing a seemingly deceased Dick to become an undercover agent for an organization called Spyral. Despite Bruce’s persuasion, Dick ultimately won the fight, solidifying his status as a fighter equal to, if not better than, Batman. Nightwing embodies all of Batman’s strengths, including his exceptional combat abilities.

5) Green Lantern

Hal Jordan, formerly the hero Green Lantern, and Batman have been at odds ever since Hal became the villain Parallax. When Hal was resurrected in Green Lantern: Rebirth, Batman didn’t accept that Hal’s evil actions were due to being controlled by another force. Their conflict quickly escalated, with Hal punching Batman. The fight was brief and is remembered as a particularly poor portrayal of Batman, even compared to some other questionable depictions. While Green Lantern is physically stronger, the incident felt uncharacteristic and unsatisfying, especially considering Bruce Wayne previously knocked out Guy Gardner with a single punch – a moment that felt more in line with the characters’ strengths.

4) Black Canary

Black Canary is a seriously skilled fighter who doesn’t always get the recognition she deserves. She has a long-standing competition with Lady Shiva, widely considered the most dangerous assassin and fighter on the planet. While Batman himself can’t defeat Shiva, Black Canary has managed to do so, proving she’s on that same level. Though they’ve never had a final showdown, Black Canary has beaten Batman in two practice matches. One occurred in Detective Comics #1107, and the other in Black Canary: Best of the Best #3 – a match where Dinah easily defeated Bruce. These instances consistently demonstrate her exceptional fighting ability, solidifying her place among the very best.

3) Wonder Woman

Diana and Bruce, better known as Wonder Woman and Batman, are incredibly close friends, but they’ve definitely had their disagreements. Their most famous fight happened after Wonder Woman promised to protect a woman who was actually a fugitive from Batman, accused of murder. This led to a confrontation where Wonder Woman easily defeated Batman – she’s almost as strong as Superman and equally skilled in combat, quickly ending the fight with a single punch. They clashed again in the same story, with Diana again being the victor.

2) Swamp Thing

Swamp Thing is a powerful being connected to all plant life, giving him control over it. He and Batman have battled on several occasions, their first meeting occurring in Swamp Thing (1982) #53. When Swamp Thing’s wife was arrested for a relationship with a creature that wasn’t human, he retaliated by attacking Gotham City. Batman initially tried to stop him with fire, but Swamp Thing easily multiplied and overwhelmed him, leaving Batman severely injured. After learning the full story, Batman helped free Swamp Thing’s wife, realizing that confronting Swamp Thing in battle was a losing effort.

1) Batgirl

As a huge DC fan, I’ve always been amazed by Cassandra Cain. She’s seriously one of the best martial artists around, even better than Batman himself! He’s admitted he’d lose to her, and we actually saw it happen in the Batgirl comic from 2000, issue #50. They both got hit with this drug called Soul that brought out rage, but while Batman tried to fight it, Cass’s inner anger just exploded. Even though Batman used all his gadgets, Cass was completely dominating him with just her hand-to-hand combat. The fight went all over Gotham, and she kept him constantly on the defensive. It got so bad, Batman actually had to blow himself up with an explosion to snap her out of it! It was a crazy moment, but it definitely proved Cass could beat him. She won, plain and simple.
