As a lifelong Power Rangers fan, I was so excited when I heard about the new live-action series coming to Disney+! It’s amazing to think that it all started with Mighty Morphin Power Rangers back in 1993, launching this huge global franchise. What’s really interesting is that this new series won’t be using any footage from the Japanese Sentai show, which is a big change. Mighty Morphin originally adapted Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger, so the two have always been linked. But it’s cool to remember that Mighty Morphin actually showed us 30 years ago that the show could work even without relying on that Sentai footage!
The original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers series borrowed fight scenes, giant robots (Zords), and action sequences from the Japanese show Super Sentai, combining them with new footage. While the amount of Sentai footage varied from episode to episode, a significant shift occurred in season 2 with the episode “Best Man for the Job.” Season 2 was based on Gosei Sentai Dairanger, and while it still used some Sentai footage, this episode uniquely featured a completely original battle between the Thunder Megazord and the Tigerzord. This was a big accomplishment at the time and remains important today because it proved the show could work even without relying heavily on Sentai footage. This trend continued and expanded with Cosmic Fury, which used even less of the original Japanese footage.
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Season 2 Teased The Start of a New Era

Throughout its history, Super Sentai has been a major component of the Power Rangers franchise, but this episode showed that the two shows didn’t always need to be connected. Cosmic Fury also introduced completely new Ranger suits inspired by Uchu Sentai Kyuranger, and while it still used footage from Super Sentai, it used significantly less than in past seasons.
Currently, Super Sentai is on hold after a surprising cancellation last year. Meanwhile, the recent Power Rangers series on Netflix has ended, but the franchise will continue. Hasbro is developing a new project for Disney+, and it looks like production will begin shortly.
This new series will be unlike any previous Super Sentai adaptation. While it will likely include references to the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, it won’t use footage directly from the Super Sentai show itself. This marks a significant change, bringing an end to a long-standing practice and ushering in a fresh approach.
