Those who remember the popular ‘OtherOS’ feature on the PS3 – which Sony removed and ultimately faced a lawsuit over – will be happy to hear that you can now install Linux on the PS5.
Earlier this year, we showed you a video of Andy Nguyen’s project where he successfully ran the game Grand Theft Auto 5 with improved ray tracing graphics at a smooth 60 frames per second using the Ubuntu operating system.
He’s now posted instructions on GitHub so you can try this yourself. He claims it won’t harm your hardware, but it’s always best to be careful if you decide to test it out.
Okay, so here’s the thing – you’ll need a PlayStation 3 that uses game discs, and it needs to be running an older software version, specifically 3.xx or 4.xx. Unfortunately, it won’t work with the newest 5.xx software, or any of the really old 1.xx or 2.xx versions just yet. It’s a bit picky about the firmware, but I’m hoping it’s worth it!
Keep in mind that this modification is temporary and will be lost every time you restart your device. The developer, Nguyen, is exploring a solution to save the Linux installation while the system is in Rest Mode, and that might be available later on. For now, you’ll need to reinstall the operating system each time you turn your system off and on.
The system supports video output at 1080p, 1440p, and 2160p resolutions, but currently only at a refresh rate of 60Hz. The developer is working on adding support for 30Hz and 120Hz in the future.
This is mainly for people who enjoy experimenting with technology. If you have the necessary equipment and software, you can find detailed instructions on GitHub to try it out yourself.
There’s also a Discord available if you require further troubleshooting support.
