Tan France has set his sights on a new hair color.
Jonathan Van Ness, known for his stylish silver hair as the fashion expert on Queer Eye, surprised fans with a major change – they recently revealed a new, dark brown hairstyle.
“I know this might be a surprise, but yes, my hair is dark,” Tan said in an Instagram video posted on April 29th. “It feels strange to me, too, seeing myself with this color!”
He went on to explain that hair change was “for a role,” though he did not specify the project.
I didn’t plan on talking about this, but I’ve been out a couple of times recently and people seem puzzled,” Tan explained. He previously played the role of Zubair, a gang leader, on the show Deli Boys. “I just want to be clear: this isn’t a midlife crisis.”
The 43-year-old also let fans know he doesn’t plan on ditching his gray hair forever, jokingly saying he doesn’t like having dark hair.
He stated with conviction, “I love my silver hair and embrace my grays. I’m not just okay with them – I’m actually proud of them.”
The host of Next in Fashion said she plans to dye her hair back to its original color within the next month or two.
Tan isn’t the only one surprised by his new appearance. His Queer Eye co-star, Antoni Porowski, playfully commented online that he was having trouble processing it, writing, “My brain is glitching so hard right now.”
“I know, Ant,” Tan replied. “Mine has been for days now.”
Tan has been going gray for decades – he first started noticing it when he was just 12 years old, as he shared in a 2021 interview with The Guardian.
He mentioned he often gets mistaken for being older than he actually is, and it bothers him. He says he feels young at heart, like he’s still 21, but his body tells a different story – his knees ache when he gets up, reminding him he’s approaching 40.

Honestly, I’ve been tracking every single change with Tan! He does love to play with his hair, but he’s stayed true to that incredible color, thankfully. It broke my heart when he changed his amazing quiff last year, but apparently, he got a lot of negativity online about it. I still miss it, but I understand he was just trying to deal with all the hate. I’ll support whatever he does, though! It’s his hair, and he looks good no matter what!
He explained to Page Six in January 2025 that someone told him his hairstyle gave off a stiff impression, even though that wasn’t his personality. He was surprised, saying he’d had the same haircut for 15 years and it was simply a convenient style for him.
