AQUAPLUS has shared new details and images for their turn-based RPG, Utawarerumono: Past and Present Rediscovered. The update introduces five characters – Amatsuki, Chicocoa, Shantuura, Varga, and Narakfala – and provides a closer look at the game’s battle and town systems.
Here are the details:
■ Characters
Amatsuki (voiced by Hitomi Ueda)

The captain of a ship of smugglers.
Her crewmen address her as “Mistress” as a sign of affection and respect.

Chicocoa (voiced by Akane Fujita)

A young woman from Arva Shulan.
She seems to have some connection to Shunya…

Shantuura (voiced by Kukuo Inoue)

The title given to the spiritual leader of Arva Shulan.
The current Shantuura is determined to do whatever it takes to give her people a real future.

Varga (voiced by Hiroki Maeda)

One of the Shantuura’s vassals.
A hot-blooded warrior who loves the thrill of battle and respects strength above all else.
He’s been sent on a mission to unearth some kind of ancient artefact.

Narakfala (voiced by Manabu Muraji)

One of the Shantuura’s vassals, mainly serving as her advisor.
With Mayacowl’s demise, he has also assumed the role of Wordsmith.

■ System
● Battle
Combat Skills and Okugi
Combat Skills are stronger than regular attacks, but they use up a character’s MP. Each character has a unique set of skills for different battle roles – like attacking, healing, boosting allies, weakening enemies, or summoning help. Later in the game, you’ll unlock even more powerful Okugi skills when in Overzeal mode. These skills cost a lot of MP, but can be game-changers in difficult fights if used strategically.

Soulstones
Okay, so as a Shunya player, I’ve learned that Soulstones are her thing – nobody else can use them. She gets one back every turn during a fight, which is awesome. Basically, I use these Soulstones to fuel her skills. A lot of them are about buffing my team or debuffing enemies, so they’re super helpful when I’m facing a really challenging boss or opponent.

Keshin Transformation
Oshtor and Mikazuchi can now use their akuruka powers to transform into powerful new forms and gain access to devastating skills. While in Overzeal mode, use the “Assume Keshin Form” command to transform. This transformation doesn’t last forever, but for a limited number of turns. Instead of using a fixed amount of MP, skills used in Keshin form consume a percentage of your total MP.
Examples:
- Oshtor’s Keshin skill, Frozen Demise (AOE Water-Element Magecraft Attack) – Consumes 16% of max MP. Massive power. Inflicts Freeze on target. Greater Morale reduction against targets on smaller Action Rings.
- Mikazuchi’s Keshin skill, Rakshasa (Non-Elemental Physical Attack) – Consumes 20% of max MP. Hits 2 times with strong-to-massive power. More powerful against targets with higher Morale.

● In Town
Requests
Keep an eye on town Notice Boards for requests for help. You can read the details and rewards for each request before talking to the person who posted it to accept. Completing these requests gives you experience and items, which can be really useful when you’re trying to level up. Plus, after finishing a certain number of requests, you can visit Yuuri at Oshtor’s mansion for bonus rewards – consider it a thank you from the Imperial Court for helping the people of Yamato!

Investment and Fortification
You can improve the items available at the Imperial Capital’s Equipment Shop by investing materials into it. These investment materials are separate from those used to strengthen Halu. Investing in specific types of gear – like weapons, armor, or leg armor – will increase the quality of items offered in that category. You can also spend money to enhance your current equipment, boosting its stats and potentially adding new effects or abilities.

● Other
Recollection Shrines
Throughout the land, you’ll find ancient shrines dedicated to the powerful beast, Nuko. If you touch one, it will completely restore your health and magic.
*Recollection Shrines appear in towns, the field, and dungeons.

The game Utawarerumono: Past and Present Rediscovered will be released on May 28th in Japan for PlayStation 5 and Switch, and worldwide on PC through Steam.
