Doctor Strange has long been the central figure representing magic within Marvel comics. Because magic is inherently limitless and hard to define, having a powerful sorcerer like him provides a point of reference and someone heroes can rely on. Now, DC Comics has introduced a similar figure. With the upcoming Zatanna (2026) #1, Zatanna will be established as DC’s primary magical authority, and the world of DC magic will be forever changed.

The Prime Magus Is the Mistress of Magic

The story begins with Zatanna revealing her passion for magic – a force that embodies both exciting possibilities and unpredictable danger. The DC Universe has evolved significantly since its early days, and magic is changing with it, becoming more complex and sometimes even darker. Once, magic was safeguarded by a powerful protector called the Prime Magus, chosen by magical entities like Toth and the Upside-Down Man to defend all realms. This role has been empty for thousands of years, but Zatanna took the initiative and declared herself the new Prime Magus, a decision that magic itself seemed to endorse.

Zatanna approached her new job as a magical troubleshooter like an exciting adventure, traveling to different realms with the goal of reminding everyone that magic could be joyful and positive. Her first case involved tracking a dangerous, cursed spirit that was jumping between worlds, possessing people and leaving a path of destruction marked by flowers and bodies. She managed to contain the spirit and vowed to help it, but she also wanted answers about why a new division of the government’s Occult Affairs department was shadowing her. They claimed they were there to work with her, a claim she didn’t trust. Despite her suspicions, Zatanna enthusiastically began her magical journey, ready to assist anyone in need.

A New Take On a Well-Established Idea

DC’s Prime Magus is similar to Marvel’s Sorcerer Supreme, but it’s a unique role with its own distinct purpose. While both positions involve overseeing magic and having a powerful trio of beings as guides, Zatanna’s job as Prime Magus goes further. Unlike the Sorcerer Supreme, who primarily protects Earth and maintains the existing order, Zatanna is tasked with defending all realities and actively creating a new era of magical advancement. She aims to be a beacon of hope, demonstrating that positive change is possible and offering a path towards a brighter future for everyone.

Zatanna is a fantastic choice for this role. She’s long been DC’s go-to magic user, but despite her importance, she hasn’t quite become a truly prominent character. She has the talent and personality to become one of DC’s most compelling figures – she just needed the right opportunity. While DC has other magical experts like Doctor Fate and John Constantine, Zatanna is unique in that she can be a voice and advocate for all things magic. This role gives her the platform to establish herself as a major hero and gain the recognition she deserves.

DC is currently experiencing a period of significant expansion. Building on the success of the ‘All-In’ initiative, the next phase, called ‘Next Level,’ focuses on broadening the DC universe with new characters and storylines. While the battle for the future continues and Darkseid attempts to crush all hope, Superman’s actions in DC K.O. released Alpha Energy – a force representing hope and new beginnings – into the universe. Zatanna is leading this evolution by taking on a long-dormant role and transforming it into a powerful means of helping others. She’s redefining magic to extend her heroic reach to new dimensions, which perfectly reflects the spirit of this new era.
