Sony Pictures just dropped the first trailer for the live-action Resident Evil movie, directed by Zach Cregger. The trailer introduces us to Bryan (played by Austin Abrams) and shows his struggle to survive a terrifying night. The movie is set to release in theaters on September 18th, and Sony is calling this “a new era of evil.”
Although the full story of the new Resident Evil isn’t known yet, the trailer suggests it follows Bryan, a delivery driver who gets caught up in a terrifying and frantic fight for survival when a chaotic night unfolds around him.
The new Resident Evil movie is a collaboration between Columbia Pictures and Constantin Film. Director Craig Cregger, known for his work on Weapons and Barbarian, also co-wrote the script with Shay Hatten, who has worked on Army of the Dead and Ballerina. Cregger, Robert Kulzer, Roy Lee, Miri Yoon, Carter Swan, and Asad Qizilbash are producing the film, while Olivia Berben, Victor Hadida, Richard Wright, and Robert Bernacci serve as executive producers.
Resident Evil stars Abrams, Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, and Paul Walter Hauser.
The trailer shows the beginning of the movie’s story: Bryan is stuck in a snowy, remote location. He searches for a working phone and comes across an abandoned house, but the phone inside isn’t connected.
Next, Bryan begins scavenging for weapons while navigating a town overrun by zombies. You can watch a short preview trailer below.
Earlier this month, industry source Daniel Richtman reported that test audiences reacted well to the movie Resident Evil. Unfortunately, no further information about the screenings has been released.
So, just so you know, the new Resident Evil movie isn’t going to be a straight-up retelling of any of the games. The director, Cregger, has said it’s an original story, but it’s totally built as a tribute to the games we love. He promises it’ll still feel like Resident Evil and stick to all the established rules of the universe, which is awesome!
Cregger emphasized that his work doesn’t violate the established rules of the game series. As a huge fan himself, he described his story as a tribute to the games, carefully adhering to its established lore while presenting something new. He explained he wasn’t interested in retelling the story of Leon, as that narrative is already available within the games themselves.
When asked about staying true to the source material for game fans, director Cregger jokingly suggested they simply replay the original games.
