BBC finally confirms air date of ‘missing’ episode of The Morecambe and Wise Show – and it’s soon

The BBC has announced the date for a lost Morecambe and Wise episode to air – and it’s coming soon!

Last week, a lost episode of the classic sketch comedy show featuring Britain’s most beloved comedians was found. The episode originally aired in the first season but wasn’t saved for future viewing.

Film Is Fabulous!, a group of film and TV collectors dedicated to preservation, recently found an episode that was long believed to be lost. They discovered it at the home of a retired television industry worker.

The BBC has announced that a classic episode from September 16, 1968, will be re-aired on BBC Four and BBC iPlayer on Thursday, May 14, 2026. This date was chosen as it would have been Eric Morecambe’s 100th birthday.

To celebrate the anniversary, BBC Four will broadcast a special collection of classic sketches titled ‘The Perfect Morecambe and Wise’.

This lost episode is the third from Morecambe and Wise’s first series back on the BBC. It includes a sketch with actress Ann Hamilton, set in a nudist colony, and features Jenny Lee-Wright as Morecambe’s niece.

It also includes a musical performance from the female trio The Paper Dolls.

Noreen Adams, head of the BBC Archives, announced that rediscovered footage of Morecambe and Wise, one of Britain’s favorite comedy pairings, will be shown to audiences across the UK. She stated that the BBC is thrilled to share this ‘comedy gold’ thanks to the Film Is Fabulous! project, which helped locate material previously believed to be lost.

Gail Morecambe, daughter of the late Eric Morecambe, expressed her excitement about seeing the show on screen again after many years, particularly because it’s happening during the year marking her father’s 100th birthday.

Gary Morecambe, son of the late Eric Morecambe, expressed his surprise and delight at a recent discovery, saying he thought everything known about his father had already been uncovered. He called the new finding ‘really quite wonderful’.

Film is Fabulous recently recovered two lost episodes of the classic science fiction series Doctor Who – “The Nightmare Begins” and “Devil’s Planet” – originally aired in November 1965. You can now watch both episodes on BBC iPlayer.

The Morecambe and Wise Show is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
