The Lord of the Rings Fan-Favorite Andy Serkis Addresses Being Cast as Voldemort

As a huge fan, I’m thrilled to hear that the world of magic is coming back to our screens later this year! It’s officially being reimagined as an HBO series, which is amazing news. They’ve announced most of the cast already, but there’s one big question mark hanging over everything: who’s going to play Voldemort? It’s a crucial role, and I’m really curious to see who they cast!

Lord Voldemort is a central character in the Harry Potter story, but he doesn’t become a major presence until the fourth book, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, when he physically returns. Because HBO likely wants one actor to play him throughout all seven seasons of the show, fans are speculating about who might take on the role. Recently, Andy Serkis, known for his work in The Lord of the Rings, publicly expressed his interest in playing Voldemort on the Happy Sad Confused podcast.

Andy Serkis Would Love to Play Voldemort

Andy Serkis is known for portraying many memorable characters, but he’s perhaps most famous for playing Gollum in the Lord of the Rings films. He’s returning to the role in a new project, which he’s also directing.

Despite this, Andy Serkis is eager to be part of the Harry Potter universe. During a recent interview with Josh Horowitz, the host jokingly brought up the possibility, and Serkis enthusiastically agreed he’d be interested.

Absolutely. I’m mostly just waiting to hear about it – it sounds like a great project. Though, it’s worth noting that Ralph Fiennes has set a high standard, so there’s a lot to live up to.

Serkis playfully declined a request to imitate his version of Voldemort, saying he didn’t want to spoil the memory of his audition. He joked that he’d happily go to great lengths for the role – even ‘chop off his nose’ – referencing Voldemort’s famously snake-like face, which lacks a nose.

Andy Serkis is well-known for playing strange, CGI characters like Gollum, so taking on the role of The Dark Lord would be a natural fit. He’s also proven he can play a villain – he was in both The Lord of the Rings and Star Wars – making him a strong candidate for a villainous role in Harry Potter as well.

Harry Potter premieres on Dec. 25 on HBO Max.
