The Hunger Games Prequel Finally Gets the Update Fans Have Been Waiting For

Last Friday, Variety revealed that two more actors – Iris Apatow and Edvin Ryding – have been added to the growing cast of Lionsgate’s upcoming adaptation of “The Hunger Games: Sunrise at the Reaping”. This eagerly awaited prequel is now officially in production. The movie, which serves as the second prequel in the “Hunger Games” series and is based on Suzanne Collins’ bestselling novel, has been penned by Billy Ray. Francis Lawrence will once again take the directorial reins for this project.

As a passionate movie enthusiast, I recently immersed myself in the gripping tale of “Sunrise on the Reaping,” which hit screens this past March. This captivating narrative unfolds amidst the tumultuous backdrop of the Quarter Quell, an extraordinary event that doubles the number of contestants compared to previous games. The story revolves around Haymitch Abernathy, one of the District 12 tributes, who finds himself in this high-stakes battle alongside a friend he considers like a sister, a compulsive gambler, and the district’s most pompous resident. Initially, I felt that fate had conspired against me to ensure my failure. However, as the story unfolds, I discover an unyielding desire within me to emerge victorious, a struggle that I yearn to see resonate far beyond the deadly confines of the arena.

The stellar cast of “The Hunger Games: Sunrise” during the “Reaping” scene includes Ralph Fiennes portraying President Snow, Elle Fanning as Effie Trinket, Mckenna Grace as Maysilee Donner, Jesse Plemons as Plutarch Heavensbee, Joseph Zada as Haymitch Abernathy, Ben Wang as Wyatt Callow, Maya Hawke as Wiress, Kieran Culkin as Caesar Flickerman, Lili Taylor as Mags Flanagan, Glenn Close as Drusilla Sickle, Jefferson White as Mr. McCoy, and Billy Porter as Magno Stift. Fresh faces Iris Apatow and Edvin Ryding will take on the roles of Proserpina and Vitus, two Capitol University students who assist the District 12 Tributes’ preparation team.

Apart from overseeing “The Hunger Games: Dawn of the Reaping,” Lawrence has also recently helmed the prequel to President Snow’s story, titled “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes.” Preceding this, he was responsible for directing “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1, and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2“. Notably, the only “Hunger Games” film Lawrence hasn’t directed so far is the initial one, “The Hunger Games“, which was steered by Gary Ross.

The “Hunger Games” series has been a massive hit for Lionsgate ever since the initial movie premiered as far back as March 2012. To this day, the five movies from the “Hunger Games” saga have accumulated an astounding $3.3 billion at global box offices. The latest addition to the series, titled “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes“, was released in November 2023 and managed to earn a substantial $348.4 million worldwide on an estimated budget of $100 million.

Apatow will soon be seen in the Hulu show “Tell Me Lies”, and was previously in “Young Werther” and “Unstable”. Regarding Ryding, he is mainly recognized for his role on Netflix’s “Young Royals”. His latest appearance was in “28 Years Later”.

The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is slated to hit theaters on November 20, 2026.
