With May arriving, Marvel Comics is kicking off a wave of new stories before summer truly begins. This year has already been significant for the Marvel Universe, as the popular Ultimate Universe concluded and iconic heroes like Iron Man, Hulk, and Captain America have taken exciting new paths. Fans are eager to see what the rest of the year holds, particularly with the upcoming Armageddon event, but first, May promises a lot of great comics!
Marvel is heavily invested in its upcoming Armageddon event. Several comic books, including Captain America and Wolverine: Weapons of Armageddon (which concludes this month), are building up to it. Alongside this, the new series Reborn: Ultimate Impact begins, continuing the storyline from Ultimate Incursion. With a variety of titles launching in May, here’s a preview of the comics you won’t want to miss.
5. Spectacular Spider-Man: Brand New Day #1

After a short break, writer Dan Slott is returning to Marvel Comics this month to work on Spider-Man, the character he famously wrote for ten years. He’s tackling a pivotal moment in Peter Parker’s history with Spectacular Spider-Man: Brand New Day, a five-issue story that’s part of the main Marvel continuity. The publisher promises this new series will reveal important details about Spider-Man’s current situation and what’s coming next. While it likely connects to the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day movie, it will be fascinating to see what Slott brings to this era, which he originally wrote over a decade ago.
4. Doomquest #1

Marvel is capitalizing on the buzz around Doctor Doom, especially with his appearance in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie. To remind fans – and introduce new readers – to Victor Von Doom, they’ve tapped Fantastic Four writer Ryan North for a new story. Doomquest #1 kicks off a 10-issue series where Doom travels back in time, determined to improve humanity in his own unique way and finally surpass his enemy, Reed Richards. The details of his plan are a mystery, but it promises to be an epic adventure.
3. Ultimate Impact: Reborn #1

When Spider-Man Miles Morales retrieved the Origin Boxes from another universe, everyone anticipated consequences. Now, those consequences are arriving in Reborn: Ultimate Impact #1, where the boxes become incredibly valuable and desired throughout the Marvel Universe. Early previews reveal the series will introduce new characters, including a new version of Wonder Man. While it’s unclear if this story will connect to the larger ‘Armageddon’ event, the details suggest it will significantly impact the future of the Marvel Universe, so it’s definitely worth checking out.
2. Captain America #11

The major Armageddon event is being led by writer Chip Zdarsky, and with Red Hulk playing a key villain role, Captain America #11 is a must-read. In this issue, Captain America’s attempt to secure Doctor Doom’s deadliest weapon goes wrong when he clashes with Red Hulk’s powerful team of Hulks. This series has been fantastic, and the events of this issue will clearly be important leading into Armageddon, so don’t miss it!
1. Wolverine: Weapons of Armageddon #4

Don’t miss the last issue of Wolverine: Weapons of Armageddon! This series gave us our first look at Marvel’s big upcoming event, and everything comes to a climax here. Wolverine gets caught in the middle of the Primewarrior’s plan to build the perfect super-soldier, teaming him up with other powerful fighters like Nuke and David Colton (who took over as Captain America after 9/11). Marvel is really promoting this as a crucial issue leading into Armageddon, so if you only read one comic this month, make it this one.
