I’m such a big fan of Helluva Boss and Hazbin Hotel! It’s amazing how popular they’ve become – they went from being a bit of a hidden gem to a huge hit on Prime Video. Getting to see the creators and voice actors at events like LVLUP Expo is incredible. It’s so cool to be among all the other fans! I especially loved seeing Brandon Rogers – he’s hilarious as Blitzo in Helluva Boss – and Morgana Ignis, who totally steals the show as Sallie May!
The creators of Helluva Boss and Hazbin Hotel are confident in their shows’ endings, already planning to wrap up Helluva Boss with season 4 and Hazbin Hotel with season 5. This means they have a clear vision for how the stories will conclude and what will happen to the characters. Brandon Rogers recently shared with ComicBook at LVLUP which character they’d be most surprised to see turn good.
CB: Is there anyone in the show’s universe that you don’t think could be redeemed?
Brandon Rogers doubts Katie Killjoy will ever be a sympathetic character. He explains that Katie represents the people who cause Viv problems in real life – those who misrepresent her words in the media. He doesn’t believe Viv would ever create a character based on those people and then give them a chance at redemption, and he predicts Katie will meet a dramatic end.
We continue our conversation with Brandon Rogers and Morgana Ignis, where they discuss the possibility of characters from Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss appearing in each other’s shows, why authentic representation is important, and hint at the key relationships and conflicts we can expect in season 3.

Congrats on Helluva Boss! The reception has been great, especially here at LVLUP.
Brandon Rogers expressed feeling incredibly successful, saying they didn’t just meet their goal, they completely exceeded it. He’s very grateful and excited that they have two more seasons to go – they’re only halfway finished!
This is our fourth year at the LVLUP Expo, and it’s amazing how many fans keep showing up to see us – it feels like they’re packed in like sardines! It’s incredible how much the show has grown, from a small indie cartoon on YouTube to a worldwide phenomenon. My fiancée and I got engaged in Japan last October, and while we were there, I was wearing a Helluva Boss backpack. As soon as I got off the train, someone ran up to me excited about it. They recognized my voice from the show, which was just wild! To think that someone on the other side of the world, in a country I’d never visited, remembered one of my characters and was a fan… it’s truly mind-blowing.
That’s really what everyone hopes for with a project like this – to connect with an audience. It’s a performer’s dream to have their work truly resonate with people. With Helluva Boss, people didn’t sign on expecting to get rich; they did it because it sounded enjoyable, and that’s exactly what it was. I joined because it was fun and my friends were involved, and it ended up being the most successful thing I’ve done as an actor. Even characters like Sallie May, who haven’t had much screen time, have clearly connected with fans in a way I never anticipated. The takeaway is to pursue what you enjoy, rather than just chasing money.
Brandon, what has surprised you the most about Blitzo?
I was surprised how popular this character became, especially since he’s so similar to me. It’s actually really reassuring. Viv, the casting director, often chooses actors who naturally embody their roles, which makes everything easier and more enjoyable. You don’t have to force anything – it feels like the part was made for you, and that helps a lot with feeling confident and like you deserve to be there. I felt like they cast me because they recognized something genuine in my personality and how I express myself, and once we started filming, it just flowed naturally.
I’m genuinely amazed by how much animation quality has improved. That’s why we created a new pilot episode – we want first-time viewers to see our current level of work, not something from years ago. We’ve really come a long way, and now we’re showing Hollywood that independent creators are a force to be reckoned with. These new projects are made with passion by people who grew up with Hollywood’s content, and they’re putting more heart into their work. We’re cutting out the traditional studio system, and every successful independent project – like Iron Lung or Backrooms – is a clear message to Hollywood that things are changing.
It’s frustrating when someone funding a project suddenly starts micromanaging the creative process. They earned their money through business, not creativity, and often don’t understand the artistic side. Ideally, they should trust the creators to do their job. What’s great about Helluva Boss is that the people funding it gave us complete creative freedom. They recognized our skills, understood our audience, and simply let us make the show we wanted to make, which was fantastic.

Morgana, what has caught you by surprise about Sallie?
I hadn’t seen the final design for Morgana Ignis until the show was released, and it was amazing! People really connected with her – she’s incredibly confident and attractive, which is fantastic. But it’s more than that; as an openly trans character, and as a trans actress playing her, it’s a rare and powerful thing. Morgana is self-assured, funny, and comfortable in her own skin, and that’s really resonated with viewers. I’ve met so many fans who’ve told me this character helped them explore their own identities, some of whom even came out years ago after first meeting me at a convention. The representation in this show is truly life-changing; it’s not just a trend. Seeing a character they can relate to has made a real difference in people’s lives. We haven’t explicitly labeled the characters as ‘trans’ or ‘transgender’ in the show; we simply allow them to exist. Our shows explore broader social and political issues rather than focusing specifically on homophobia or transphobia.
With the character of Sallie, we wanted to tell a story that wasn’t just about her being transgender. So many stories focus solely on coming out or seeking acceptance, but Sallie had already navigated those issues. This allowed us to explore a different storyline, starting with our short film, “Hell’s Bells.” It centers around Sallie’s first visit to Imp City, which is a stark contrast to her rural hometown. We delve into the dynamic between Sallie and Millie – Millie invited Sallie to visit, but Sallie kept delaying, and when they finally spent time together, it was wonderful. They clearly have a close bond. However, during the visit, Sallie’s insecurities surface as she sees what her sister’s life is like and compares it to her own. She becomes fearful, almost believing Millie left her behind for this new life. This leads to a deeply emotional conversation where they both realize that as adults, it’s easy to drift apart from people you care about, even unintentionally.
Nothing dramatic happened, there wasn’t any conflict, but the characters are facing real-life responsibilities as they start families. It dawns on one of them that they haven’t talked to their sibling in half a year. Ultimately, they both commit to strengthening their relationship, which is something many viewers connected with – I’ve had a lot of people tell me they called a family member they hadn’t spoken to after watching that episode. That episode also sets up a big reveal at the end of the second season: Millie finds out she’s pregnant and immediately calls Sallie. Before that point, viewers might not have predicted that Sallie would be the first person Millie would turn to, but the episode makes it clear how close they’ve become. I think the show does a great job of developing these relationships so the audience feels invested in them.

What can you tease for Season 3 of Helluva Boss?
I find the storyline of Stolis struggling to be really compelling. We’ve always known him as a noble figure, so it’s fascinating to see a different side of him. This situation allows the Imps to see sides of Stolis they hadn’t seen before. The trailer shows Millie connecting with him on a personal level, something that wouldn’t have happened if he were still in a position of power. I appreciate that he’s now one of the group, truly part of the team. He’s always been a central character, but now he can really let loose and get involved with everyone else.
Without giving away any major plot points, the important conversation Millie and Sallie begin at the end of season two will be picked up and explored further. Expect them to discuss it a lot more in the future.
Hearing that Season 4 will be the end of Helluva Boss was definitely a big moment for all of us working on the show. It’s made me think a lot about what I want to accomplish with my writing – I’m really focused on giving these characters the satisfying conclusions they deserve and making sure we leave a lasting impact on the fans. It’s bittersweet, knowing we have a limited number of episodes left, but it’s also incredibly motivating to make every scene count and tell the best story we possibly can.
From the very beginning, we’ve had a clear plan for how this series would conclude, including the final season and episode. We know the ultimate fate of every character. Often, viewers notice changes – a character feeling different or the story losing direction – but every choice each character makes is deliberately designed to move them toward the planned ending.
The storyline is very carefully planned, and everything happens for a reason. That’s what makes it a strong narrative – there’s no unnecessary content, and the creators always know what comes next. I’m really pleased that our showrunner is so dedicated to the series and its direction.
How do you approach the tonal balancing act?
Brandon Rogers believes we all have a good sense of how stories should feel emotionally. Because we’ve all watched so many movies and TV shows, we instinctively understand how long sadness or happiness should last for a character. He feels the show balances both sad and funny moments well, but he doesn’t think the creators have ever consciously decided when to change the emotional tone.
We generally have a clear idea of how the story progresses, knowing what will happen next. The main focus for us in the writers’ room isn’t the plot itself, but the specific dialogue and how it’s phrased. We’re always thinking about how fans will react to and analyze every line, and we spend a lot of time ensuring the characters’ wording doesn’t create any inconsistencies or problems.
What’s it like seeing Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss crossover?
As a huge fan of both Helluva Boss and Hazbin Hotel, I have to say, seeing these two worlds start to blend together is incredibly exciting! I can’t reveal any details about how it’s happening, but it’s so surreal showing up to work and reading a script with characters from both shows just… talking to each other. It’s wild to see characters who, logically, shouldn’t even know each other interacting, and the reactions are fantastic. Honestly, I think this crossover is happening in a really clever way, and nobody’s figured out the ‘how’ yet. It feels like the absolute perfect way to bring these two universes together.
Who would your dream crossover pairing be?
Morgana Ignis thinks Cherry Bomb is a perfect match – they both have a wild, energetic vibe! She’d really enjoy seeing Sally Mae and Cherry Bomb go out together; she imagines it would be a lot of fun.
