Despite being around for a decade, Pokemon Go still has a dedicated player base. However, many players find the game repetitive unless there’s a special event happening. These events add fresh content like new Pokemon, rare Shiny Pokemon, and helpful bonuses, encouraging both new and veteran players to engage. Regular weeks, beyond daily rewards and research tasks, can often feel stale. To address this, Niantic is testing a new feature called “Evergreen Weeks” starting in May.
So, Niantic’s been talking to some of the biggest Pokemon Go players about a new test they’re calling “Evergreen Weeks.” The news has spread pretty quickly, and honestly, the reaction is all over the place – typical Pokemon Go, right? Basically, instead of constant events, we’ll have weeks with just regular gameplay and a new Special Research story. It’s hard to say how it’ll actually feel until May 5th when the first normal week hits, but if you’re someone who loves diving into research tasks, this could actually be a really cool change!
Pokemon Go Begins Testing New “Evergreen Weeks” Branching Research

The month of May started with the ‘Steeled Resolve’ event in Pokemon Go, which introduced the Pokemon Orthworm. This event lasts until May 4th, followed by a short break before Lechonk Community Day on May 9th. The next week-long event, the Spring Marathon, begins on May 12th. This schedule suggests that Niantic’s new ‘Evergreen Weeks’ program will likely begin testing around May 5th.
A recent post on Campfire, which was also shared on Reddit, details a new feature called “Evergreen Weeks” coming to Pokemon Go. This will give players more to do between events by offering different research options. During non-event weeks, players will be able to choose from three unique research paths.
- Exploration – tasks & rewards for spinning PokeStops and walking (such as bonus XP for spinning PokeStops
- Skill – tasks & rewards for landing throws while catching Pokemon (such as bonus Candy for catching Pokemon)
- Battle – tasks & rewards for completing Raids (such as bonus XP from Raids)
The specific research tasks will change each week, offering varied goals and rewards. However, during the May test phase, you can expect to consistently find options centered around Exploration, Skill improvement, or Battle challenges.

So, the news about these “Evergreen Weeks” has been floating around on social media, and honestly, most of us Pokemon Go players aren’t super excited. I’ve been reading comments, and a lot of us feel like it’s just not enough to keep us playing when there aren’t any special events going on. One player put it perfectly – if the Pokemon that are appearing aren’t interesting, there’s just no reason to log in. It seems like a lot of us are disappointed that they’re not focusing on cool seasonal spawns with this new test.
Some players are interested in trying out the new bonuses, but many would rather watch past events again or have Spotlight Hour return. Still, extra Candy and XP are helpful, even if they aren’t quite enough to get people excited on their own. We’ll have to see how the first permanent research tasks play out to get a real sense of how fun they are.
