The upcoming Harry Potter series on HBO has filled most of its key roles, but a few important characters are still uncast. The most significant is Lord Voldemort, and producers have time to find the right actor since he doesn’t fully appear until the fourth book, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. While the series might show Voldemort in flashbacks, the casting process is ongoing. There are many potential actors who could play the Dark Lord, and suggestions have ranged from controversial – like Ralph Fiennes supporting Tilda Swinton – to ideal, as one perfect actor recently expressed interest in the role.
During an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, host Josh Horowitz shared that he suddenly realized Andy Serkis would be an ideal choice to play Voldemort. Serkis seemed enthusiastic about the idea, saying he was “just waiting for the call.” He acknowledged that Ralph Fiennes, who previously played the role, set a high bar, but expressed interest. When asked how he’d approach an audition, Serkis jokingly offered to even go as far as cutting off his nose for the part.
Andy Serkis Would Make a Perfect Lord Voldemort in Harry Potter

Andy Serkis is an incredibly versatile actor, excelling in diverse roles. He’s known for his chilling performance as Gollum in The Lord of the Rings and his impressive motion capture work as King Kong. He even showed off his comedic timing as Ulysses Klaue in Black Panther. But playing Lord Voldemort would present a new challenge for Serkis – Voldemort is arguably more intimidating than any character he’s portrayed before, though Serkis’ experience suggests he’d nail the physical aspects of the role.
HBO hasn’t given any clues about who they’re considering to play Lord Voldemort. Reports about Tilda Swinton were just rumors, and Ralph Fiennes was only responding to the speculation when he mentioned it previously. Cillian Murphy was also a possibility, but he directly denied the claims. It’s common for actors to be secretive about these roles, either due to confidentiality agreements or because talking about it could jeopardize their chances. Paul Bettany, known for playing Vision in the Marvel movies, was another actor linked to the part.
I have to say, the idea of Andy Serkis potentially joining the new Harry Potter series is incredibly exciting! Apparently, it started as just a suggestion Anthony Horowitz made when chatting with him, and Serkis was a good sport about entertaining it. While it’s still just speculation, it’s given fans like me something fun to imagine and debate until we finally hear who’s been cast. I really hope it happens!
