While HBO’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms was originally intended to resolve a major unsolved puzzle from Game of Thrones, it’s probably not going to happen. This new prequel series is based on George R.R. Martin’s The Tales of Dunk and Egg, and there are currently three stories available. Martin plans to write around twelve stories in total, but he’s been working slowly, so the show will likely run out of source material to adapt.
Having thoroughly enjoyed season one of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which adapted The Hedge Knight perfectly, I’m excited about what’s to come. It sounds like season two will cover The Sworn Sword, and season three will tackle The Mystery Knight. But the really big news? Showrunner Ira Parker has revealed George R.R. Martin shared his complete outline for the rest of the Dunk & Egg stories, potentially taking us all the way to the tragic end of Dunk and Egg’s journey at Summerhall. That’s a lot of story to look forward to!
Adapting the Tragedy at Summerhall for a show like A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms would be amazing, as this event is still a major unsolved puzzle in the A Song of Ice and Fire story. However, it seems unlikely the spinoff series will ever cover it.
A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms Might Never Resolve The Tragedy At Summerhall
The first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms did very well, suggesting a bright future for this Game of Thrones prequel. However, planning for 12 seasons – a commitment spanning 15 to 20 years – is a huge undertaking for any television show. The actors would effectively have to dedicate their careers to the series, and even then, some cast changes would be unavoidable. If the creators, Parker and Martin, insist on strictly following their planned 12-book storyline, the show likely won’t be able to fully complete its intended ending.
The biggest chance for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms to cover the events at Summerhall would be if the show jumped ahead, skipping parts of George R.R. Martin’s planned storyline. This would likely require recasting the character of Egg, as he’s supposed to be almost 60 years old by that time. However, this seems improbable, mainly because Martin probably wouldn’t want the TV show to reveal a major mystery before it’s addressed in his books.
The Tragedy At Summerhall Remains Game Of Thrones’ Biggest Mystery
The disaster at Summerhall is detailed in George R.R. Martin’s books, Fire & Blood and A World of Ice and Fire, though Martin intentionally left many details unclear. We know that King Aegon V Targaryen, known as Egg, gathered his family at Summerhall to celebrate the pregnancy of his grandson’s wife, who was carrying Rhaegar’s child. During the gathering, Aegon attempted to use wildfire and pyromancy to revive ancient, petrified dragon eggs, but the attempt went terribly wrong.
Ser Duncan the Tall, the Lord Commander under Aegon, bravely rescued King Aerys, Queen Rhaella, and their newborn son, Rhaegar, amidst the turmoil. Sadly, Dunk perished while saving his king, running back into the fire. Almost all the other Targaryens died at that time, which explains why so few Targaryens were left by the start of Game of Thrones.
George R.R. Martin presents much of Fire & Blood and A World of Ice and Fire as if they aren’t written by him at all, but are instead discovered historical documents from within the story’s world. The events of the Tragedy at Summerhall remain a mystery because almost no one survived, and those who did wouldn’t speak of it. Adding to the mystery, the account written by the maester who witnessed the tragedy was damaged, leaving out important details.
Dragon’s blood collected into a single source, and seven eggs were offered to the seven gods. However, the king’s religious advisor had cautioned against using fire magic, specifically wildfire. Unfortunately, the flames quickly became uncontrollable, rising high and burning with intense heat.
Considering Daenerys eventually managed to revive dragons, many fans believe that Egg may have foreseen this in a dream. He might have confused Daenerys with her mother, Rhaella, who was pregnant at the time, and attempted to make that future happen at Summerhall. Whether his efforts failed, and if this theory is even correct, remains a mystery. While the book A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms could potentially offer some answers, it’s still doubtful we’ll ever truly know what happened.
