Since its beginning in 1966, Star Trek has consistently pushed the boundaries of space exploration and introduced fans to a vast universe filled with memorable characters. Whether you grew up with the original series, The Next Generation, the classic Star Trek movies, or the newer films and shows, there’s a Star Trek experience for everyone. Now, a new Star Trek game is coming out that truly celebrates the franchise’s history by including characters and storylines from three different eras – and we’re excited to try it!
Matagot’s new game, Star Trek: Space Hunt, is a 2-vs-2 experience where one team plays as the Federation and the other as the villains. Players choose characters from three different eras of Star Trek – the original series, The Next Generation, and Discovery – and work together to protect their ship. A unique feature is a double-sided screen that hides each team’s board from the other, adding to the thematic tension. Space Hunt is scheduled to be released later this year, and you can get a first look at it below.

Star Trek: Space Hunt Is Based On Another Fan Favorite Game

In Star Trek: Space Hunt, you can create battles between pairs of characters and villains from different Star Trek series. You can play as the heroes Captain Kirk and Spock from the original series, Captain Picard and Data from The Next Generation, or Captain Michael and Saru from Discovery. On the villain side, you can play as Khan and his first officer, but the other villain teams haven’t been revealed yet.
Space Hunt is essentially a Star Trek-themed take on the popular game Captain Sonar, but it includes important improvements and new features that fit the Star Trek universe. Like Captain Sonar, it’s a team-based game where you try to find and destroy the opposing team’s ship before they find yours.
Each crew member has a specific job, and everyone needs to work together and perform their role well to find and destroy the enemy submarine. These roles include the Captain, Chief Mate, Radio Operator, and Engineer. You’ll be hunting for the enemy sub while also trying to avoid being detected and keeping your own submarine in working order.
This version of the game focuses on two players – a Captain and their partner – working together to find and defeat the opposing team’s ship in space. It really embraces the Star Trek theme, letting you do classic things like jump to hyperspace or cloak your ship, and the developers have hinted at other improvements to the original game.
Each Captain will have different costs for learning skills. For example, some Captains might reduce the cost of cloaking your ship. This likely applies to villains as well, and many skills aren’t balanced – meaning each side has unique strengths and weaknesses to keep in mind.
We don’t have a release date for Star Trek: Space Hunt yet, but you can see it in action at the UK Games Expo from May 29th to May 31st, 2026.
