It’s a fantastic game, but many of us have played it repeatedly and are now looking for something new. It’s time to move on from Mass Effect and give another excellent sci-fi RPG a try.

If you’re looking for excellent sci-fi RPGs, here are some must-play titles – including both popular favorites and a few hidden gems. While I have a separate list for really obscure games, these offer unforgettable experiences that will likely leave a lasting impression. Whether you enjoy vast open worlds, stories where your choices matter, or classic space adventures, these sci-fi RPGs are a great pick – and while they’re amazing, they aren’t quite like Mass Effect.

5. The Technomancer

Looking for a game with the feel of Mass Effect but something different? The Technomancer is a fantastic, yet often overlooked, choice. It borrows many of the best features from BioWare RPGs, offering a captivating sci-fi story packed with intrigue, surprises, and interesting characters. While it doesn’t have the same level of polish as BioWare’s titles, The Technomancer is brimming with ambition, creativity, and passion, making it a genuinely enjoyable experience. This expertly made sci-fi RPG from Spider is ideal for Mass Effect fans, as it essentially carries on its legacy in spirit.

4. The Outer Worlds

Obsidian Entertainment’s The Outer Worlds offers a sci-fi RPG experience similar to Mass Effect, but with its own unique flavor. Although the series stalled after its second game, both installments remain engaging adventures full of space travel and planet exploration. Like Mass Effect, you’ll journey to diverse planets, each offering unique quests and storylines, and meet a memorable cast of quirky characters with their own personal stories.

The main difference between these two games is that The Outer Worlds plays more like the Fallout series than BioWare’s famous sci-fi RPG. Both games are enjoyable and don’t share a story, but the second one is definitely better in terms of gameplay.

2. Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader

Okay, so I’ve been playing Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, and honestly, it’s incredible. It’s not just a great CRPG, it’s easily one of the best sci-fi RPGs I’ve ever played. The writing is top-notch, the world is unbelievably detailed, and it really brings the Warhammer 40K universe to life. As a long-time fan, I love that it dives into everything within the 40K universe – it’s a nice change from always playing as a Space Marine! But even if you’re totally new to this grimdark setting, the game does a fantastic job of pulling you in. If anything does confuse you, there’s this awesome in-game codex that explains it all perfectly. Seriously, this game is a must-play.

Similar to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Rogue Trader benefits from being set within the established Warhammer 40,000 universe, which gives it a strong foundation for storytelling. However, having played many disappointing Warhammer 40,000 games, I know that it’s how a game uses its source material that truly matters, and Rogue Trader excels in this regard. It boasts a fantastic cast of companions and supporting characters, a compelling main story, diverse and engaging locations, and combat reminiscent of XCOM. If you enjoy sci-fi RPGs like Mass Effect, I’m confident you’ll love Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader.

1. Cyberpunk 2077

Any list of top sci-fi RPGs has to include Cyberpunk 2077. It’s a truly exceptional game, and frankly, everything that needs to be said about it probably already has been. But if you’re looking for a deeply engaging story in a unique and detailed sci-fi world, filled with interesting jargon and lore, Cyberpunk 2077 is a perfect choice. Even if you’re more focused on gameplay, you’ll still enjoy it – the combat, stealth, and character customization options make every mission a blast.

It’s no surprise that Cyberpunk 2077 and Mass Effect are very different games. Similar to The Outer Worlds, Cyberpunk 2077 is a first-person shooter that centers around one huge, detailed city rather than multiple planets. Night City is so well-designed and immersive that it quickly feels like a second home. In fact, it rekindled my love for sci-fi RPGs, something I hadn’t expected after Mass Effect had a similar effect years ago. Cyberpunk 2077 is a game everyone should play, and if you didn’t know that already, you do now.
