While superhero films generally only win Oscars for technical aspects like special effects, DC movies have surprisingly earned several major acting awards – something the Marvel Cinematic Universe hasn’t done. This success dates back to the 1970s and 80s, with early, influential DC films receiving Oscar recognition and helping to launch the superhero movie genre.
Early Superman films with Kirk Alyn and George Reeves paved the way, but the first truly large-scale comic book movie was the 1978 release of Superman, launching a successful franchise. A few smaller projects followed in the 1980s until Tim Burton’s Batman in 1989 proved to Hollywood that these films could be incredibly profitable. After Batman & Robin disappointed audiences and critics, Marvel stepped up with the Blade and X-Men franchises.
DC experienced a resurgence in the 2000s, starting with Christopher Nolan’s reimagining of Batman and continuing with Zack Snyder’s DC Extended Universe. Now under the leadership of James Gunn, DC films have consistently achieved success at the Academy Awards. In fact, five DC-based movies have won Oscars, totaling seven wins – three more than all the Marvel Cinematic Universe films combined since 2008, when The Dark Knight was released.
5. Superman (1978)
The 1978 film Superman was the first large-scale movie based on a DC Comics character. Christopher Reeve famously played Clark Kent/Superman, and many critics still consider him the definitive actor to portray the role. Interestingly, the film’s creative team included some major talents: it was co-written by Mario Puzo, author of The Godfather, directed by Richard Donner (known for The Goonies), and featured Marlon Brando, an Academy Award winner, in a supporting role as Jor-El, Superman’s father.
Despite being nominated for three Oscars – Best Film Editing, Best Original Score by John Williams, and Best Sound – Superman didn’t win any of those awards. It did, however, receive a Special Achievement Award for Visual Effects, which was given because there wasn’t a dedicated Visual Effects category at the time.
4. Batman (1989)
In 1989, Tim Burton reimagined Batman for the big screen, making some bold choices. He surprisingly cast Michael Keaton – an actor famous for comedy roles, like in Mr. Mom – as the Dark Knight. Burton also moved away from the lighthearted, campy style of the 1960s Batman TV series, opting instead for a darker, more gothic tone, much like his film Beetlejuice.
The movie Batman was a commercial success, earning $411.3 million after its release. While it only received one Oscar nomination – fewer than Superman did ten years earlier – it did win that single nomination, taking home the Oscar for Best Art Direction. This was a significant achievement, recognizing Tim Burton’s work in creating the film’s distinctive gothic atmosphere, which continues to define the look of Batman today.
3. The Dark Knight (2008)
Christopher Nolan first gained recognition with the intriguing film Memento, and in 2005, he was chosen to revitalize the Batman series with Batman Begins. The success of that film led to a trilogy, with The Dark Knight becoming Nolan’s most acclaimed work. It also demonstrated that superhero movies could be just as compelling and well-made as any serious crime thriller.
Throughout his career, director Christopher Nolan has been recognized with numerous Oscar nominations and wins, and The Dark Knight continued that trend. The film received eight nominations, ultimately winning two awards. It earned an Oscar for Best Sound Editing, but the more significant win was for Heath Ledger, who made history by becoming the first actor to win an Oscar for a role in a superhero movie. Ledger, who tragically passed away six months before the film’s release, was awarded Best Supporting Actor.
2. Suicide Squad (2016)
When the first Suicide Squad movie came out, critics didn’t like it very much, but Margot Robbie’s portrayal of Harley Quinn was a standout. Despite the negative reviews, the film made a lot of money – over $749 million worldwide. Years later, a sequel arrived that was much better received, thanks to director James Gunn joining the project.
It’s surprising to learn the first Suicide Squad movie actually won an Oscar! But it makes sense when you consider what Oscar it won: Best Makeup and Hairstyling. With characters like Harley Quinn, the Joker, El Diablo, and Enchantress, the film’s makeup and hair were truly exceptional.
1. Joker (2019)
The most recent DC film to receive an Academy Award was Joker (2019). Notably, it wasn’t connected to the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) or the new DC Universe (DCU), existing as a standalone story. The film offered a unique take on the Joker’s origins, focusing on Arthur Fleck (played by Joaquin Phoenix) and his descent into madness, rather than portraying the traditional comic book villain. Joker was a major box office hit, earning over $1 billion worldwide and receiving 11 Academy Award nominations.
Following Black Panther, Joker was only the second superhero film to be nominated for Best Picture. Director Todd Phillips also received a nomination. While Joker ultimately won two Oscars – Best Original Score for Hildur Guðnadóttir and Best Actor for Joaquin Phoenix – it wasn’t a total sweep. Phoenix became the second actor to win an Oscar for playing a superhero, after Heath Ledger. This win came for the DC film release of Joker.
