It’s tough to find a game quite like Animal Crossing. While titles such as Disney Dreamlight Valley and Hello Kitty: Island Adventure – and even popular indie games like Cozy Grove – try to capture that same relaxing and engaging feeling, they each add their own unique elements. These games are all fantastic options for Animal Crossing fans looking for something new to play.
If you’ve already enjoyed games like Animal Crossing and are searching for something similar, you’re in luck! While we eagerly await the next Animal Crossing game, which feels like it’s taking forever to be announced, many players are looking for a way to fill that void. I’ve put together a list of games that capture the relaxing and social aspects of Animal Crossing, offering a fun way to pass the time until Nintendo releases its next big title – a game they’ve likely been working on for years.
5. Magician’s Quest: Mysterious Times

I really wanted to rank Magician’s Quest: Mysterious Times higher on this list because it’s essentially Animal Crossing meets Harry Potter. I don’t say that lightly! The game is incredibly similar to Animal Crossing in almost every way – from how it looks and moves, to how you play. You go to a magic school, make friends with your classmates and neighbors, fish, catch bugs, cast spells, decorate your room, and go to class. If you’re looking for a game that feels just like Animal Crossing but with a magical setting and new characters, Magician’s Quest: Mysterious Times (also known as Enchanted Folk and the School of Wizardry in Europe) is a great choice.
The biggest problem with this game is how hard it is to find. While you can buy a physical copy, they’re pricey and rare. It also never officially left Japan, meaning you need to know Japanese to play unless you find this original version. It’s surprising it didn’t become popular in Western markets, given how much it appeals to fans of cozy games today. I think a remastered version would be a huge hit with that audience. However, if you’re willing to spend the money and are looking for something similar to Animal Crossing, I highly recommend Magician’s Quest: Mysterious Times.
4. Chill Town

Chill Town is a laid-back indie game similar to Animal Crossing, making it a great choice for fans of Nintendo’s popular title, especially those who enjoy decorating. While it’s designed to be an idle game – meaning you can largely let it run on its own – it also offers plenty to do if you want to interact. Ultimately, Chill Town is all about creating a relaxing atmosphere and enjoying the scenery, which makes it one of the most comforting games available.
Though it’s missing a few features from the classic Animal Crossing games, this feels like a genuine port to PC. You’ll discover a beautiful, peaceful town filled with charming and unique characters. Customize your home – and even the area around it – with lots of furniture you can unlock. Enjoy relaxing activities like fishing, farming, and befriending animals, all at your own speed. There’s plenty to do, making it perfect for fans of New Horizons‘ more engaging style of play.
3. Grow: Song of the Evertree

For a long time, Grow: Song of the Evertree was my absolute favorite cozy game to play. It’s beautiful to look at, with bright colors and unique environments – something fans of the developer’s previous game, Yonder: The Cloud Catcher Chronicles, will likely expect. In Grow: Song of the Evertree, you explore a central area, develop a small town, and attract new residents, each with their own desires. You can build shops, customize the town’s appearance, and explore the surrounding lands to collect materials.
After the initial setup, the game really opens up and you start exploring different areas that need your attention. That’s where things get really fun – I found tons of rare materials, got to care for adorable little creatures, and the gameplay became much more engaging. It’s a deeply immersive and surprisingly cozy experience. It definitely reminds me of Animal Crossing with its social elements, but it also throws in a bunch of fresh ideas I haven’t seen before. There’s a lot more to Grow: Song of the Evertree that I don’t want to spoil, but it all adds up to a genuinely heartwarming and enjoyable game – perfect if you love losing yourself in the towns and islands of Animal Crossing.
2. Amber Isle

Amber Isle combines the friendly social interactions of games like Animal Crossing with the shop-running gameplay found in titles such as Moonlighter. You’ll venture across the island to find valuable materials, use them to create items, and then sell those items to the island’s inhabitants. The money you earn lets you grow your shop, customize its look, and even decorate the island itself. This gameplay style will feel familiar to fans of Animal Crossing and other relaxing games, and Ambertail Games does a fantastic job with it.
What truly sets Amber Isle apart—and makes it a great choice for Animal Crossing fans—is its cast of Paleofolk characters. Each islander isn’t just fun to talk to; they feel like real people you’ll genuinely want to get to know. This is especially appealing because the recent Animal Crossing games have focused more on gameplay than the social connections that originally made the series so beloved. If you enjoy building meaningful relationships with your villagers as much as I do, you’ll fall in love with Amber Isle and its charming, friendly dinosaurs.
1. Galactic Getaway

If you’re looking for a game to play while you wait for the next Animal Crossing, I highly recommend Galactic Getaway. It’s not a perfect copy, unlike Magician’s Quest, but it captures the same cozy feeling. Plus, it’s much better when it comes to playing with others. In Galactic Getaway, you’ll make friends with alien creatures, build a house, grow crops, and enjoy a bunch of fun, lighthearted minigames – perfect for relaxing and passing the time.
Inspired by games like New Horizons, Galactic Getaway offers a fantastic multiplayer experience combined with the charm of a social simulation. It really feels like it could rival Nintendo’s popular Animal Crossing series! Right now, though, it’s surprisingly overlooked – it hasn’t gotten much attention on Steam despite being one of the few games that truly captures that cozy, Animal Crossinglike feeling that so many players are searching for. You should definitely check out Galactic Getaway*; you won’t be disappointed.
