The Rookie season 9 release date and latest news

The popular show ‘The Rookie’ will be back for a ninth season! News of the renewal came just weeks before the current eighth season ends, proving the show remains a hit with viewers.

Audiences love John Nolan, portrayed by Nathan Fillion, as he progresses through the ranks of the LAPD after deciding to become a police officer later in life.

Over the years, we’ve watched him get married, cope with some difficult personal times, and bravely face challenges both on and off the job.

As a huge fan, I’m so excited that Season 9 makes The Rookie the third-longest-running drama on ABC! And when showrunner Alexi Hawley told Deadline they want to make the show last as long as Grey’s Anatomy, it sounds like they’re really committed to keeping it going for years to come, which is fantastic news!

What can we expect from Nolan and the team in season nine? Here’s a rundown of everything revealed about the new season so far.

When is The Rookie’s season 9 release date?

Currently, there is no official release date for The Rookie season 9.

Despite its long run of eight years, the show has consistently released new seasons, typically every year and a half.

The show has typically premiered in January and run until May for the last two seasons. While Season 6 began in February 2024, it was originally planned to follow this schedule. However, the 2023 Hollywood strikes impacted production, leading to delays and fewer episodes.

Considering this, they’ll probably stick with this release plan, meaning season 9 should come out around the beginning of January 2027.

We will update as we learn more!

What is the plot of The Rookie season 9?

Currently, there is no official word on what the plot of season 9 could be.

The Rookie follows a familiar crime procedural format with a new case each week, but it also features continuing storylines that explore the personal lives of its main characters.

The show has expanded beyond the original setting of the police station where we first encountered Nolan. For example, in season 8, some team members traveled to Prague as part of a multi-agency effort to stop drug trafficking.

With this in mind, the sky’s the limit over where the show can go.

Who is in the cast of The Rookie season 9?

We don’t yet know which cast members will be back for season 9, but it’s highly likely Nathan Fillion will reprise his role as the main character.

The current main cast of The Rookie season 8 consists of:

  • Nathan Fillion as John Nolan
  • Alyssa Diaz as Angela Lopez
  • Richard T Jones as Wade Grey
  • Melissa O’Neil as Lucy Chen
  • Eric Winter as Tim Bradford
  • Mekia Cox as Nyla Harper
  • Shawn Ashmore as Wesley Evers
  • Jenna Dewan as Bailey Nune
  • Lisseth Chavez as Celina Juarez
  • Deric Augustine as Miles Penn

Fillion, Diaz, Jones, O’Neil and Winter have appeared in every episode of the series to date.

I’ve always loved Bridget Regan’s character, Monica Stevens! She’s this really clever, but totally shady, former lawyer who shows up throughout the series. She’s an ‘information broker’ – basically, she sells secrets to the highest bidder – and has been causing problems since season 5. She’s only been in 17 episodes so far, but she definitely makes an impact and ends up on the run!

At the end of season 7, she avoided prison by making a questionable agreement with Homeland Security. Since then, she’s appeared in season 8 working as an informant for the FBI.
