Moon Knight’s MCU Future Addressed by Head Writer & The Key Condition For Oscar Isaac’s Return [Exclusive]

Instead of following the typical storylines of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Moon Knight created its own unique and intense atmosphere. Oscar Isaac delivered a standout performance, convincingly portraying Marc Spector, the shy Steven Grant, and the tough Jake Lockley as completely separate personalities within the same body. Both critics and viewers praised this bold approach, giving the show high ratings on Rotten Tomatoes and making it the most popular new series premiere in the U.S. during the first three months of 2022. Moon Knight also earned nine Emmy nominations and a Saturn Award, solidifying its place as one of the most celebrated shows in Marvel’s Multiversal Saga. Despite this success, Oscar Isaac hasn’t returned to the role in four years, and Marvel Studios hasn’t announced any plans for the character’s future. Jeremy Slater, the creator of Moon Knight, recently shared some insights into this pause in a conversation with ComicBook while promoting Mortal Kombat II.

According to Slater, Oscar Isaac’s contract allows for future appearances if compelling stories are developed that creatively interest him. Marvel essentially has the flexibility to bring him back whenever they find the right project. Isaac is actively involved in shaping the character’s future, so the biggest task for Marvel is finding stories he’s excited about. While it might take time to develop a story worthy of his involvement, and coordinating schedules with a popular actor is always challenging, Isaac’s connection to the character suggests the wait will be worthwhile.

Where Can Moon Knight Show Up Next in the MCU?

The first season of Moon Knight told a complete story, intentionally keeping it separate from the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. This allowed the show to have its own unique style, but it also meant fewer obvious connections to future Marvel projects. However, the finale did introduce Jake Lockley, a dangerous third personality connected to the Egyptian god Khonshu, and his story remains unfinished. Focusing a potential second season on Jake Lockley could be a good reason to bring Oscar Isaac back to the role.

Adding to the changes, the planned Blade movie seems to be cancelled, which opens up new options for how the character, Marc Spector, might appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Blade film, starring Mahershala Ali, has faced numerous problems over the years – including changes in directors and scripts, and a lack of progress on getting it made. Now, there’s talk that Marvel is shifting its focus to Midnight Sons, a team-up concept from the comics featuring supernatural heroes like Blade, Ghost Rider, Moon Knight, Doctor Strange, Werewolf by Night, and Elsa Bloodstone, who work together to fight mystical dangers. Several of these characters are already part of the MCU, and Oscar Isaac has even said he’d be excited to see this team come together.

Speaking frankly, Slater said he doesn’t expect to be involved creatively if Moon Knight gets a second season. He hasn’t spoken to Marvel in three years and has no idea what their plans are – whether there will be a Moon Knight movie, a Midnight Sons movie, or even another season of the show. He’s just as much in the dark as the fans are. However, Slater is optimistic that the character will return at some point, as he believes Oscar Isaac enjoyed the role and was pleased with the positive fan reaction. He feels it’s likely we’ll see the character again, but admits that’s just his personal speculation as a fan.

Mortal Kombat II, which Slater writes and produces, will hit theaters on May 8th.

Do you want to see Oscar Isaac reprise his role as Moon Knight? Would you rather he get another standalone series, or team up with the Midnight Sons? Share your thoughts in the comments and join the discussion on the ComicBook Forum!
