Amazon’s MGM Studios is now adapting the popular video game “Wolfenstein” for television. As announced by Variety on Friday, Patrick Somerville (“The Leftovers”) will create, write, produce, and oversee the series as its showrunner. Additionally, Jonah Nolan, Lisa Joy, and Athena Wickham will also serve as executive producers via their Kilter Films banner. Previously, discussions for a “Wolfenstein” film date back to 2012, with Roger Avary set to write and direct a movie based on “Castle Wolfenstein,” but that project did not materialize.
The project seems to be in its initial phases, and there’s a possibility it may not proceed further. Nevertheless, if it does progress, it would represent the second video game adaptation for Kilter Films, who are also known for producing Amazon Prime Video’s hit series, Fallout, which is based on a series of video games. Although the specific game the series might be inspired by remains undisclosed, those involved in the project have been tight-lipped about the details. However, the upcoming series’ plotline, focusing on killing Nazis, should come as no surprise to fans, given its timeless appeal.
The Wolfenstein video game series kicked off in 1981 with the debut of Castle Wolfenstein, a game developed by Muse Software specifically for the Apple II. Its sequel, Beyond Castle Wolfenstein, followed in 1984, and was a direct continuation of the first game, featuring a nameless soldier on a mission to kill Hitler. Over the years, the franchise expanded with titles like Wolfenstein 3D, Spear of Destiny, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, Wolfenstein RPG, regular Wolfenstein, Wolfenstein: The New Order, Wolfenstein: The Old Blood, Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus, Wolfenstein Cyberpilot, Wolfenstein: Youngblood, and the Deluxe Edition of Wolfenstein Youngblood.
Prime Video Is the Perfect Home for Wolfenstein
As a dedicated movie critic, I firmly believe that Amazon’s Prime Video is an ideal platform for a potential Wolfenstein series. Their successful transformation of Fallout into a captivating television series, combined with their previous success in hosting the critically acclaimed The Man in the High Castle, clearly demonstrates their aptitude for bringing complex and engaging video game adaptations to life.
Moreover, Prime Video has already proven its suitability by housing the popular series Hunters, led by Al Pacino. This further solidifies my conviction that a Wolfenstein adaptation belongs on this platform. It’s not just about one potential adaptation, but rather part of a growing list of video game adaptations in development at Prime Video, which includes God of War and Mass Effect. In essence, Prime Video seems to be the perfect destination for bringing these iconic video game worlds to life on the small screen.
In the past, Somerville – known for his passion towards the Wolfenstein series – has been involved in shows such as The Leftovers, Maniac, Station Eleven, and 24: Live Another Day. If this potential project gets approved and turns into a series, it would mark a significant milestone in Somervile’s career. Additionally, he is an accomplished author who has penned novels like The Cradle and The Bright River.
Following Kilter Films on Prime Video, you’ll find the second season of “Fallout” streaming in December. Interestingly, the streaming platform has already commissioned a third season for this popular series. As for the anticipated “Wolfenstein” television series, a release date is still under wraps.
