The Game Boy, first launched by Nintendo in 1989, became one of the best-selling handheld game consoles ever, with over 118 million units sold, including the Game Boy Color. Although Nintendo stopped making Game Boys in 2003, fans haven’t stopped creating games for it. In fact, new consoles like the ModRetro have helped keep the Game Boy alive, and people are still developing games for it today. We’ve rounded up five recently released Game Boy games from the 2020s that you likely haven’t heard of.
1) The Mayor of Sanctuary

In the adventure game The Mayor of Sanctuary, you play as Yuu, who is called out of retirement to deal with a sudden surge of spirits from the Sanctuary forest. As the only one who can restore peace, you’ll explore a large world filled with characters, monsters, puzzles, and obstacles. The game is available digitally and as a physical copy for both the Game Boy and Game Boy Color. A playthrough typically takes between 1.5 and 2 hours, and it offers a decent amount of replay value. You can find more information about it here.
2) Nightmare of the Ninth King

Nightmare of the Ninth King is a fantasy action-platformer inspired by classic games like Castlevania and Mega Man. The game is challenging, featuring lots of enemies and difficult platforming sections. You play as Aryn, a woman with an iron whip, who must explore a world filled with characters and secrets while solving a mystery and battling enemies. It’s available to play online in your browser or as a downloadable ROM.
3) Phobos Dere

Phobos Dere is a horror game where a scientist, haunted by past experiments and filled with regret, discovers a cursed Game Boy cartridge. This forces him to confront his fears and relive terrifying memories. It’s a charming and unusual horror platformer that intentionally mimics the look and feel of early Game Boy games, boasting impressive technical work and lots of content. While Limited Run Games released a physical copy of the game, which is currently sold out, you can still play it by downloading the game file or accessing it through a web browser.
4) Wink and the Broken Robot

In Wink and the Broken Robot, you play a platforming adventure helping a robot find all its missing parts. The game takes place in a beautiful, overgrown world after some kind of disaster, with plenty of hidden secrets and levels to discover. You’ll use a laser to get around, collecting coins, unusual items, and retro artifacts like cassette tapes and floppy disks. Power-ups give you special abilities to help on your journey. The game’s style is reminiscent of classics like Super Mario Land 2 and Link’s Awakening, but it offers a fresh and original experience. The developer compares it to a mix of Mega Man and Kirby>. You can purchase a physical copy or download the game now.
5) Glory Hunters

Glory Hunters is an action RPG for the Game Boy, but it updates the classic formula with a modern achievement system. The game begins in the center of a world map, and players journey to one of four corners to seek help from a god and prevent a devastating meteorite impact. With plenty of enemies and a sprawling world to explore, a full playthrough takes around 20 hours. Originally designed for the Game Boy, Glory Hunters is now available on Steam, Nintendo Switch, as a physical cartridge, and even playable directly in your web browser.
