Tracker Season 3 Lays The Groundwork For Its Much-Needed Change

Be warned, this contains spoilers for Tracker season 3, episode 19, “Chain of Custody.” As the 2025-2026 TV season nears its end, Tracker is preparing for changes. With only three episodes left in its third season, the show starring Justin Hartley is starting to shift its storytelling in ways that will likely affect future seasons. These changes will also reveal more about the events surrounding Ashton Shaw.

Since premiering in 2024, Tracker has quickly become television’s most popular show. While Taylor Sheridan’s Marshals is gaining ground, Hartley’s series remains incredibly well-liked. Tracker is a great asset for the network, though it’s not without its weaknesses. One issue has been frequent cast changes, which have made it difficult to build a strong team dynamic, as Colter often works alone. Fortunately, CBS appears to be taking steps to fix this.

Tracker Sets Up Reenie’s Bigger Role In Season 4

The latest episode of Tracker, season 3’s “Chain of Custody,” is one of the show’s best yet. It features a gripping case and, importantly, allows Reenie to work alongside Colter in the field from the very beginning. While Reenie has teamed up with Colter before as one of the show’s original characters, their involvement usually came later in the story. This time, they’re partners throughout the entire investigation.

The finale of “Chain of Custody” suggests significant developments for the character Reenie in future episodes of Tracker. Following a difficult experience, Reenie begins firearm training, driven by a desire to regain control – something she’s struggled with since becoming independent after a challenging childhood. This training, coupled with a heartfelt conversation with Colter, sets the stage for Reenie to take on a more prominent role in season 4 of Tracker.

The show is developing Reenie’s character beyond simply being Colter’s lawyer. Her backstory offers a promising avenue for future storylines, potentially explored next season. Furthermore, her newfound ability to use a firearm opens up possibilities for her to participate more directly in field operations alongside Colter, though not at Billie’s level. This gives the show more options for how to involve her in the action.

Why Tracker Needs To Diversify Its Storytelling Moving Forward

Even after three years, the show Tracker remains a hit, consistently drawing strong ratings, likely because the focus on Hartley’s character connects with the audience. However, CBS should consider expanding the show beyond a single lead. Many long-running, successful network dramas feature a team of characters, which helps sustain interest over time.

Increasing Reenie’s role is a positive move, as she’s the second most important character after Colter, given her long history with the show. The episode “Chain of Custody” also nicely shows Randy and Mel collaborating, which is a good way to build a team feel for Tracker, despite the characters rarely being together on screen.
