Disney+ is getting a big boost from the Marvel Cinematic Universe this month with several new releases focusing on a particular part of the franchise. The MCU is a vast, interconnected world of heroes, drawing characters from various backgrounds and even different universes – like their take on the Fantastic Four.
When people talk about the best Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, team-up films with huge, world-ending or even universe-threatening stakes consistently rank highest. But the MCU isn’t just about these large-scale events – there’s a lot more to appreciate beyond the biggest battles.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe isn’t just about its biggest events – some of the most interesting stories are found in its smaller projects. Shows like WandaVision and the song-filled Agatha All Along explore the magical side of the MCU, as do films like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and the first Doctor Strange movie. Another popular area is the cosmic side, with the Guardians of the Galaxy films and the Captain Marvel movies being great examples.
Marvel’s gritty, street-level stories first gained popularity with the Netflix shows like Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Punisher, and The Defenders. These shows launched a new direction for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and that style continues with the new Marvel TV series being released. Now, this part of the franchise will be featured prominently in May.
3. Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 (Finale)
The second season of Daredevil: Born Again finishes on May 5th, making it the only new episode of a Marvel show arriving on Disney+ that month. Throughout the season, Charlie Cox’s Daredevil battled to defeat Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin and save New York City. The stakes were high, with several significant characters killed, including Vanessa at the hands of Bullseye and Daniel, who was shot by Buck.
Everything is set for an exciting conclusion! Daredevil and his allies, including Jessica Jones returning as played by Krysten Ritter, must finally defeat Mayor Fisk. Meanwhile, Matt Murdock is publicly defending Karen Page in court. Recent photos from the set of Daredevil: Born Again suggest Luke Cage and Iron Fist will also return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the finale might hint at how the Defenders team will reunite.
2. Daredevil: Born Again Official Podcast (Finale)
The last episode of Daredevil: Born Again season 2 arrives on May 5th, and with it comes the final episode of the Daredevil: Born Again Official Podcast. Available on Disney+, the podcast offers behind-the-scenes insights into the season, featuring the showrunner, Dario Scardapane, and cast members discussing important scenes and moments.
As a huge Daredevil: Born Again fan, I’ve been loving the official podcast! They’ve already had some great guests, like Charlie Cox, Vincent D’Onofrio, Wilson Bethel (who plays Bullseye!), Ayelet Zurer, and even Michael Gandolfini. Honestly, with how the season 2 finale is shaping up to be a total game-changer, the podcast is the perfect thing to listen to right after you finish watching. It really adds to the whole experience!
1. The Punisher: One Last Kill
Rounding out Marvel’s May releases on Disney+ is The Punisher: One Last Kill, arriving on May 12th, just after the season finale of Daredevil: Born Again. This special presentation will connect Frank Castle’s story from the first season of his MCU series to his planned appearance in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
Jon Bernthal returns as the Punisher, and also helped write this special presentation alongside director Reinaldo Marcus Green, who previously worked with him on HBO’s We Own This City. In The Punisher: One Last Kill, Frank Castle tries to find peace and leave his vengeful past behind, but is once again drawn into a world of conflict. This Disney+ release is expected to be a thrilling conclusion to the franchise’s May offerings.
