Steven Spielberg’s Canceled Cult Sci-Fi Series Finally Returns to Streaming

Dinosaurs and prehistoric worlds are popular again, with shows like La Brea returning to streaming. Now, Steven Spielberg’s beloved classic is available to watch for free on Tubi, letting audiences revisit his imaginative—and visually impressive—take on humans entering a version of Earth they shouldn’t be in, and dealing with the resulting fallout.

Set in 2149, the series Terra Nova takes place on a future Earth ravaged by overdevelopment and pollution. Facing the planet’s inevitable decline, scientists discover a way to open a portal through time and space, leading to prehistoric Earth. This offers humanity a final opportunity to start over. The Shannon family travels through the portal to Terra Nova, hoping to build a sustainable life, but they soon realize some members of the expedition have hidden agendas that threaten the mission to save humanity.

Terra Nova was Sci-Fi Camp at its Most Fun

Despite its flaws, Terra Nova has a certain appeal. While it blends complex scientific ideas with action, and the acting isn’t stellar, many find it enjoyable. According to critic Matt Roush, if you can get past the lengthy explanations and familiar family tropes – like a rebellious teen and a nerdy daughter – there’s plenty of exciting dinosaur action and stunning visuals. However, Sarah Toth had a different view, comparing it unfavorably to Lost and Jurassic Park, suggesting it’s full of mystery without the sophistication, and dinosaurs without the thrills – essentially, a captivating mess.

Viewers tended to be a bit kinder to Terra Nova, appreciating its over-the-top style and the intriguing mystery at its core, especially when combined with relatable family struggles—made even more dramatic by the presence of dinosaurs. One viewer noted it slowed down in places but created one of the most imaginative worlds ever seen on television. Another suggested that if the show had aired recently, it likely would have been renewed for a second season. This feels accurate; despite its flaws, Terra Nova was remarkably unique, and nothing quite like it has been on TV before or since. It’s a shame the network considered it too costly to continue, as future seasons could have really allowed the show to flourish.
