From the creators of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt comes The Blood of Dawnwalker, a large open-world adventure – though not quite as massive as their previous game. Recently, the developers at Rebel Wolves shared that the game has actually grown beyond their initial plans, offering around 50 hours of gameplay for the average player. However, players who prefer a quicker experience can choose to skip parts of the story.
According to lead quest designer Rafał Jankowski, players can actually finish the game right after the Prologue. This is linked to the main character, Coen, and his quest to rescue his family within a 30-day timeframe. Completing this mission helps Coen grow stronger, find companions, and weaken the power of the vampires.
As a player, I love that the game doesn’t really force you down any one path. The developer, Jankowski, explained that after the opening, you can actually head straight for the final boss – the vampire and his crew! It’ll be super tough, but all the content is there if you want to try it. You can skip pretty much all the side quests if you want to just jump into the action. It’s really cool that they’ve built it that way.
Okay, so this is a tough one. I haven’t personally tried it myself, and honestly, I’m not sure how tough it is. The designers definitely didn’t want players stumbling into it on their first playthrough – it’s meant to be a real challenge. But they’re hoping speedrunners and really dedicated players will figure it out pretty quickly after the game launches. It is possible, though, so someone will crack it eventually!
This could lead to players finishing the game in under 30 minutes, which is exciting. The developers intentionally made the game challenging, but they expect dedicated players will find a way to complete it quickly. The bigger question is what will happen after the initial 30-day period, but that’s something they’ll address closer to the game’s release.
You might prefer to experience the game as designed initially, to see how the challenges escalate as Coen becomes more infamous. While bounty hunters will pursue you, the game’s creative director, Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz, also revealed that, at its most intense, Coen can effectively shut down the entire city.
Challenging the vampires in charge, even when it’s difficult, can earn you the rebellion’s respect. It’s unclear if this will translate into actual help, but it could make them more willing to assist you in the future.
The Blood of Dawnwalker will be available on September 3rd for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC. You can find the PC system requirements and see how the character Coen transforms into a wolf to navigate the nighttime world.
