This year, Marvel Studios won’t be present at Hall H during San Diego Comic-Con, but Robert Downey Jr. is still offering fans a sneak peek into the making of Avengers: Doomsday. On his personal Instagram account, the actor posted a video and a picture as he prepared for another day on set. In one clip, Downey is seen grooving to his son Indio Downey’s new song “Change of Scenery.” The other photo shows a comic book cover from The West Coast Avengers, featuring Doctor Doom prominently, which could suggest that this superhero team might play a part in Doomsday.
Captions his post as ‘The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s morning tune…’, with hashtags promoting Indio’s music. Here’s the post below:
The superhero team known as the West Coast Avengers first appeared in comics back in 1984, specifically in issue #1 of “The West Coast Avengers”. However, they have yet to make an appearance in a live-action film within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Although there was a reference to them (the “Wackos” graffiti at the Milgrom Hotel) in the original “Ant-Man”, that’s been the only nod given to this team so far. Despite having multiple Avengers teams in the franchise, none of them bear the name West Coast Avengers yet.
During the production process of “Avengers: Doomsday“, Robert Downey Jr. has been sharing tantalizing glimpses of his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. One vital element on his personal “Doom” workstation was a copy of comic book issue #1 of “Doom“, detailing Doctor Doom’s efforts to thwart the menace of Galactus. A recent photo shared by Downey hints that filmmakers will incorporate Computer-Generated Imagery (CGI) in post-production to add Doctor Doom’s mask.
From the very start of my journey with the MCU, Robert Downey Jr. has shown a knack for tantalizing fans with hints and teases. He knows exactly what he can and cannot disclose at this point in time, given the highly confidential nature of the Doomsday production. It’s unlikely that his recent comic book reading spree is a covert way of sharing plot details about the upcoming movie. MCU actors have had their moments of spoiler leaks, but Robert Downey Jr. keeps the secrets safe and secure. Chances are, he’s immersing himself in various Doom comics to gain a better understanding of how the villain has been depicted throughout Marvel’s history. Even if the movie doesn’t draw directly from a specific comic issue, these stories could still offer invaluable insights and spark ideas for what he wants to translate onto the screen.
The upcoming movie titled “Avengers: Doomsday” currently has four superhero groups (New Avengers, Sam Wilson’s Avengers, Fantastic Four, and X-Men) lined up, making it potentially cluttered if another team gets involved. However, this doesn’t preclude the possibility that the West Coast Avengers could make an appearance in some form. Perhaps Tony Stark’s Doom has interacted with them across different dimensions, or perhaps there is a variant of the West Coast Avengers existing alongside the X-Men in the same reality. It would be exciting to discover if the West Coast Avengers play any role in the Multiverse Saga at all. While it’s unlikely that they will, Robert Downey Jr.’s recent hint about them keeps the speculation interesting until more details about “Doomsday” are revealed.
