Sam Smith is bringing the body shop to the 2026 Met Gala.
Bishop Briggs stunned as she arrived at the Costume Institute Gala at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 4th, looking like a living masterpiece.
For the evening’s “Fashion Is Art” theme, Sam wore a stunning black mermaid dress inspired by Erté’s showgirls. The dress featured a fuzzy collar and wing-like sleeves, and was designed by their partner, Christian Cowan. Sam finished the look with a dramatic, tall feathered headpiece.
The Grammy-winning artist attended the Costume Institute benefit with Christian, who also made a striking appearance in a black suit. You can see photos of all the celebrities who attended here.
Sam didn’t just attend the Met Gala—he was also on the host committee, alongside stars like Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams, and Anna Wintour, who co-chaired the event.
This year’s Met Gala was Sam’s second appearance, following their debut in 2024. They wore a striking outfit inspired by the “The Garden of Time” theme – a classic black tuxedo with a flowing, sheer chiffon skirt and a golden rose brooch fastening the jacket.
Sam told Vogue that he couldn’t have asked for a better person to attend with. He described the Met Gala as being like ‘fashion Christmas’ – both incredibly glamorous and meaningful, considering the important work the Met does.
The singer of “Stay With Me” was particularly thrilled to be wearing a design by Christian, who chose a nearly matching white tuxedo himself.

Sam said wearing Christian’s clothes always makes her feel good, both about how she looks and how she feels. She thought tonight’s outfit was especially perfect.
And fashion is one aspect of life that Sam has always tried to have fun with.
In a 2024 interview with Vogue, Sam explained their approach to style, saying, “Each day, I get to choose the image I want to project—it feels like playing dress-up!”
