To mark his 100th birthday, leading wildlife TV presenters like Chris Packham, Steve Backshall, and Martin Dohrn paid tribute to the man who inspired their careers.
I was reading something really beautiful by Chris Packham the other day. He was imagining what it would have been like a hundred years ago in Isleworth, West London. He pictured just a normal newborn baby, like any other, starting out on life’s journey. But it turned out that baby was David Attenborough – and now, looking back, it’s incredible to think that seemingly ordinary start led to him becoming the biggest voice for our planet and all its amazing life!
It’s easy to list people who’ve negatively impacted the world, leaving a legacy of pain and suffering. But when it comes to those who’ve genuinely made things better – not just for humans, but for all living creatures – only one person truly stands out. This individual’s love of life and ability to share that passion with others has captivated people of all ages around the globe.
A century brings immense change. Humans have begun to explore space, discovering faraway galaxies while also making incredible advancements in medicine, like antibiotics and organ transplants. We’ve created beautiful art, music, and technologies like television and artificial intelligence. However, this progress has come at a steep price. While our population has soared to 8 billion, the natural world has suffered greatly, with many species declining or disappearing altogether, and even our climate has been damaged. Amidst all our achievements, it’s important to remember the sadness felt by those who have witnessed and tried to protect the Earth’s fragile beauty.
It’s hard to imagine where we’d be without Dave, someone who brings so much positivity to the world. His energy and dedication have made a real difference – even a little fly somewhere is buzzing thanks to him! Happy Birthday, Dave – the world is a better place with you in it.
