It appears the show Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has overlooked a key detail about Lt. Commander James T. Kirk (played by Paul Wesley) and his older brother, Lieutenant Sam Kirk (Dan Jeannotte). Both brothers will appear in season 4 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, which begins streaming on Paramount+ on July 23rd.
The series Strange New Worlds changed established Star Trek history by revealing that Sam Kirk was a crew member on the USS Enterprise before his brother, James, became Captain. Strange New Worlds also showed a friendship developing between Sam and Captain Christopher Pike (played by Anson Mount), while James Kirk quickly gained recognition in Starfleet while serving on the USS Farragut.
Sam and James T. Kirk have a long-standing competitive relationship, stemming from their father, George Kirk. Both brothers joined Starfleet hoping to earn their father’s approval, but James quickly surpassed everyone – even their father – becoming the youngest First Officer in Starfleet history. Despite their rivalry, Sam and James share a significant connection.
Sam & James T. Kirk Are Parents In Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 4
Although it’s not often shown in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, both Sam and James T. Kirk have children. During a musical episode in season 2 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, James revealed to Lieutenant La’an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong) that his girlfriend, Carol, was expecting a baby.
Carol Marcus is the mother of James T. Kirk’s son, David. Between seasons 2 and 4 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, about two years will pass, meaning David will be a young child. While Jim Kirk doesn’t mention Carol or David in season 3 of Strange New Worlds, David is established as being born and will eventually grow up to appear as an adult in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.
Interestingly, the show Star Trek: Strange New Worlds hasn’t acknowledged that Sam Kirk is married with three young sons. This information comes from Star Trek: The Original Series episode “Operation — Annihilate!”, which is set about five years after the events of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4. In that episode, we learn Sam’s wife is named Aurelan and one of their sons is called Peter Kirk.
In the original Star Trek episode “Operation – Annihilate!”, Captain Kirk’s father, Sam Kirk (played by William Shatner), dies along with his wife Aurelan and two other sons. Peter Kirk is the only surviving son, but he disappears after that. Despite this established family history, the recent series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds hasn’t mentioned anything about Sam Kirk’s family.
Will Sam & Jim Kirk’s Families Appear In Star Trek: Strange New Worlds?
As a huge Star Trek fan, I’m really excited about the possibilities with Strange New Worlds. With two seasons and sixteen episodes still to come, there’s a real chance we might finally see Carol and David Marcus, and even get a glimpse of Sam Kirk’s family! I’m especially intrigued by the idea that Sam’s wife and sons could feature in the series finale, perhaps explaining why he decides to leave the Enterprise when James T. Kirk takes command. It would be a fantastic way to tie up loose ends and add some emotional weight to the story.
It’s unlikely we’ll see Carol and David Marcus in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. In Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, James Kirk made a promise to Carol to stay out of their son David’s life and let her raise him alone. Kirk also prioritizes his career with Starfleet and doesn’t want to be reminded of his son.
Despite this, there’s still a possibility Carol Freeman could appear in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, a casting many fans have wanted since James mentioned her to La’an. A romantic storyline involving Carol, Jim, and La’an was conceivable, as there was already attraction between Jim and La’an, but La’an’s relationship with Spock (Ethan Peck) makes that less likely.
To stay true to established Star Trek history and provide a complete storyline, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds should introduce Carol and David Marcus, and Sam Kirk’s family, before it concludes in season 5. The Kirk family is important to the overall Star Trek story, and the series needs to show all aspects of James and Sam Kirk’s personal lives.
