It’s a common response when actors talk about their work: they almost always say the quality of the script is the most important thing. Whether discussing what attracted them to a part, a show’s success, or even award nominations, the answer is usually the same – it all comes down to the writing.
It might sound surprising, but it’s never been more accurate. This is especially true when looking at comedy. While large-scale dramas dominate prime time, attract famous actors, and win major awards, British comedies – often more subtle and modest – are actually gaining more viewers and becoming increasingly popular.
Shows like ‘SoHa’ and ‘Big Boys’ create incredibly detailed worlds and memorable characters, with compelling storylines. As Rosie Jones, the creator and star of ‘Pushers,’ explains, the challenge is not just telling a story, but finding the funniest way to do it.
This year at the Baftas, we’re honoring everyone involved in comedy – the performers and the writers. Increasingly, those two roles are being filled by the same people! It makes sense – if you want to ensure a script gets the recognition it deserves, why not write it yourself?
